The resources can be used to make connections between the text and the students’ world while promoting their agency. First, students will build their knowledge about literacy through the non-fiction readings. Then, students will make connections between the book and their own life by building a bookshelf for Amal filled with their personal recommendations for her. Next, the resources guide students through an advocacy project to raise funds for literacy organizations or participate in a book drive. By the end of these projects, students will have made numerous connections between Amal Unbound and the world, gained new perspectives about the importance of education, and had an opportunity to serve as an agent of change. Amal Unbound: Quizzes, Tests, Essays - Assessment Bundle: After students complete the chapter analysis, comprehension reading assignments, vocabulary assignments, and projects, they will know Amal Unbound inside and out. The Common Core aligned assessments will then help you measure your students’ comprehension of the text and their ability to apply the literary skills taught throughout the unit. The materials include 17 mini-quizzes, 3 comprehension quizzes, 1 final literary assessment, 1 novel quotes assessment, and essays. Writing Resources: The writing resources will develop your students writing abilities. Through the structured and scaffolded lessons, your students will learn how to embed quotes in their writing then elaborate on them, both crucial skills for close-reading texts and generating text-dependent responses. The six mini-lessons introduce then focus on transitions, context, speaker, quote, and location. Once they are familiar with these components, students practice deploying each one in their own writing through scaffolded exercises. By the end of the lessons, students will be able to compose their own analytic paragraphs with embedded evidence. Vocabulary Resources: Teaching vocabulary is an important part of any lesson. The vocabulary resources will help students learn, acquire, and utilize new words for their writing and speaking. The vocabulary resources will engage students in varied activities to maximize their vocabulary’s expansion. The resources include materials to help teach challenging vocabulary words in Amal Unbound and build your students’ vocabulary knowledge. The materials provide opportunities for differentiation to suit the needs of the classroom. Pacing Guide: The alignment guide provides a list of the resources and standards that have been woven into the fabric of that resource. The pacing guide outlines a suggested schedule of lessons, readings, and activities in order to complete a 6-WEEK study of Amal Unbound. The pacing guide may need to be adjusted to meet the rhythm of your classroom and needs of your students. PLEASE NOTE: This resource is NOT EDITABLE! During the school year we read Flying Solo by Ralph Fletcher. As a way to culminates the novel and review skills for our state assessment we created Bloom Balls. A Bloom Ball is a 3D project that challenges students to use all of the levels of Bloom's taxonomy. My Smarties L-O-V-E-D this project! They had so much fun making each section and talking to each other about favorite parts, character traits, and themes. This Novel Bloom Ball is a series of 12 circles. Students create the ball by writing 12 different activities based on the novel. The questions ask students to discuss the setting, character traits, symbolism, theme, make connections between the book and other text, draw pictures, and look critically at vocabulary. You can make the sections whatever you need them to be, and on what ever topic your students are studying. They can be fiction or nonfiction, author study, biography, you name it. This project is so versatile. Take a look at the pictures below of my student projects, and consider adding this to your "TO-DO LIST" for the next year. I'm sure students could create amazing projects based on summer reflections or as an All About Me project for Back to School! If you are interested in a Novel Study- Book Report Bloom Ball project, you can go {HERE}.

It helps students to identify main narrative components, understand and organize information, and summarize. It helps students identify cause and effect and is an important part of problem solving across subjects. I’m sure you will be happy to use this material in your classroom. If you have any requests about my work, please drop me a note.
