It teaches radial symmetry, balance, and negative and positive spaces. The students take a square paper and fold it into 8 sections (like a pizza). Their names are drawn on one of the slices making sure the tops and bottoms of their letters touch the edges of the slice. They can work from the middle corner out or the outside edge in... either look very nice. They outline their name with a permanent black marker on front and back of the paper. They use this first original name to trace to the seven remaining slices. Students need to understand that every other wedge will be flipped (backwards) because it is a reflection. Then the next wedge will be forward again... So on and so on. This gets a little confusing, so I made this tracing order guide 😉 We used the window as our tracing table. Every other triangle will be a backward name. This is normal and necessary. After the name is transferred by tracing to all 8 triangles, students begin coloring. I tell them to plan ahead by "dotting" the spaces with the colors they want to use to create any accidents caused by carelessness. Here Haley is using a purple marker to dot all of her A centers. . I let them use colored pencils, crayons, or markers. I made sure they understood that each triangle must be colored the same as the original triangle. I encouraged them to try to use brighter bolder colors for the negative spaces to disguised their names better if they wanted that effect. I like people to not see the name at first until they look further. I think they turned out beautifully! It was definitely not as hard as I was expecting. I will be doing these next year as well. Stamp it as a success! Last week was finally our first week of school. It was great!! I was thinking about posting some of the cool things we did and realize...
Popping in super quick to share an idea with ya! I don't know about you, but my kiddos struggle with word problems more than pretty much anything....they struggle with remembering what all the words mean... - how many fewer - in all - how many all together - how much greater - _ times as many You get the idea. Some of my peeps get confused as to what operation to use. I have the cute posters up, and that helps....but practice makes perfect:) A few months ago I decided we needed some more word problem practice...so Word Problem Wednesday was born:) Every Wednesday afternoon I devote to word problems. Random word problems from our textbooks. I try to mix it up lots:) The kids really like it and look forward to it. They all have their dry erase boards and their books and I also put each problem up on the ELMO. I set a timer and give them 1-2 minutes to solve it depending on the problem. Now, when I started this I was having the kids raise their hands.....well my teammie started doing this too and she added some more fun. A) using Class Dojo to pick kiddos randomly B) adding some simple prizes Love that random button!!!!! "Prizes" are simply pencils and erasers. They love it even more now;) With the random picker, I call on the student it picks...if they have the wrong answer I hit it again and pick someone else. Once I get a correct answer, they all hold up their boards to show me their answers and I can see who got it and who didn't. Word problems have become fun and not so threatening now:) Last week our time got cut about 10 minutes short and they were complaining......did you hear me?!?!?! Complaining because we didn't do word problems for long enough!!!! Maybe this is something you can do in your classroom:) Would love to hear how you tackle word problems with your kiddos:)

I am so excited to share one of my FAVORITE books!!!! Since today is Wednesday, I am linking up with Scarlett over at Speech is Sweet for “Wild About Books Wednesday” and I’m linking up (a day late...as usual) with Mrs. Jump’s Class for “Book Talk Tuesday”! Since Halloween is in a few days...I’m moving on to planning for Thanksgiving! “One is a Feast For Mouse: A Thanksgiving Tale” by Judy Cox is one of my all time favorite Thanksgiving books! In this absolutely adorable book our sweet mouse friend sneaks out of his hidey-hole to find some yummy food. As Mouse scampers over to the table he sees a luscious green pea. He decides a pea will be enough for him and starts to head back home. As Mouse is walking across the table he starts to notice more and more food scraps. Mouse gets greedy and all kinds of craziness ensues! Go grab the book to see what happens next! I am so excited to use my new book companion, “One is A Feast For Mouse: A Book Companion for Language” (click here) to introduce my kiddos to this book! Here is how I am going to use this book in therapy... (Click on any of the images to see the Book Companion in my TPT store!) ***Vocabulary- There are so many Tier 1 and Tier 2 vocabulary words in here!!! ***Sequencing- We are going to use the retelling map and booklet to sequence and retell the story. A few years ago, I made large drawings of Mouse and all of the food, so we are also going to use the felt board while we read! I’ll post pictures later on facebook (click here) and instagram (@thespeechowl). Make sure you are following me on both! ***Comprehension Questions- Some of my kiddos are going to expressively answer the comprehension questions and some of my kiddos will have answers presented visually in a field of 3. ***Categories- We are going to work on several different category sorts!!! ***Plural Nouns- We are going to work on plural nouns using the Tier 1 vocabulary from the book! ***Past Tense Verbs- We are going to work on past tense verbs based on the events in the story! ***Synonyms and Antonyms- We are going to determine if word pairs are synonyms or antonyms. We are also going to produce synonyms and antonyms and do a worksheet for each! What else... We can also discuss what we want to have at our Thanksgiving feasts (there is a page with visuals for this). We can talk about greed. We can talk about what we are thankful for. How will you use this book in your therapy sessions?! Click to Check out this money saving bundle...One is A Feast For Mouse: A Book Companion for Language" and "I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Pie: A Book Companion for Language". See you soon! This is lesson 7 in our study of Jesus on Wednesday night for preschool. The visuals I decided to create for this class are two per page. The pictures have a flap for the teacher to fold on the dotted line and it will be a stand-up. I plan to add each one as I teach and line them up on the table. Let’s talk about the helpers that Jesus picked. They are called Disciples, which means follower. Jesus picked 12 men to follow Him. Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, and He saw two brothers fishing. (1) Peter and (2) Andrew was throwing a net into the sea. Jesus told them "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately, they left their nets, and they followed Jesus! Then, Jesus saw two more brothers named (3) James and (4) John. They were in a boat fixing their fishing nets. But, when Jesus called to them, they left the boat immediately to follow Jesus. Jesus went to Galilee, and He found (5) Philip and told him to “Follow me.” Philip was from Bethsaida. Philip found (6) Bartholomew. He was also called Nathanael. He asked Philip if anything good could come out of Nazareth and Philip told him to come and see Jesus! Jesus was walking and He saw a man named (7) Matthew sitting in a tax office. Jesus told Matthew to "Follow Me", and Matthew stood up and followed Jesus! Matthew was a tax collector. He collected taxes outside the city of Capernaum. People who came by him had to pay taxes for items they traded. The fishermen also paid taxes on their catches. People didn’t like the tax collectors because the overcharged to make extra money for themselves. They cheated people! (8) Thomas is known as Doubting Thomas because he didn’t believe that Jesus, after He died was raised from the dead. (9) James is also called James the Less. There were 2 men named James. (Point to the fisherman) Then, (10) Simon and (11) Thaddeus. We don’t know too much about these three. Last, we have (12) Judas Iscariot. He is the one that betrayed Jesus. Judas was the treasurer for the Disciples. He betrayed Jesus for money. Jesus told His disciples to “Go, teach all people, baptize and do what I have taught you.” Matthew 28:19-20. Scriptures are Matthew 4:18-22; 9:9-13, Luke 6:12-15, John 1:43-51; 12:6 Click here to download the stand-up visuals. You can download the full-size visuals here. Click here to download the worksheet. When we came to Matthew the tax collector, I used this display. We went to the table, and I showed them how Matthew would have taken money for different goods. You can see more next week when the post in live. The lesson is for Jesus picking the four fishermen for Disciples. So, we decided to do an overall lesson on all the Disciples. This includes the color and black & white. It also has a teacher's visual ready to print. Students can glue as you discuss each Disciple, or this worksheet can be used with a review. I cut the disciples out and put them through my sticker maker before class. They love stickers! It doesn't matter if they mix up the men, since we don't know what they looked like anyway. Click here to download. Click here to download the lesson. Click here to download the teacher's visuals. Click here to download the pictures to color. Click here to download a one-page foldable disciple's book. Click here to see the ideas and more for preschool at D is for Disciples of Jesus. Click here to see the original post with Jesus is the Great Physician. Another lesson in this series is Jesus eating with Matthew. People didn't like the tax collectors back then, but Jesus told Matthew "Follow Me." And Matthew did. Right away. Some people didn't like that Jesus ate with tax collectors and sinners. Jesus told them that He was there to help people. I used the Great Physician Kit on pages 8-9 in this Miracles pack. Click here to download it. There are several posts using the same graphics. The Venn worksheets are here. There are quite a few ideas and printables, including the lesson for the Disciples here. More ideas and printables for the Disciples here! The Disciple's Anchor Charts have a picture and an 'About Me' on each page. There are several extra posters for Disciples and the Apostles are included also.
