Judging from the number of commenters we got on the Embroidery Companion book giveaway a few weeks ago - I have a feeling that a lot of you know and love Alicia Paulson. Her blog, Posie Gets Cozy, stands out in my mind as kind of the ultimate craft blog. Her photos are a gorgeous story in warmth and tone - her feeling for color is instinctive, and she knows how to share tantalizing details that make you feel at once at home and inspired. She pulls it all together with some really excellent writing - truly thoughtful and well-crafted. Just a few posts in and you can tell she really knows how to tell a good story. It's hard to put all of those elements together in a creative way, but Alicia has done it for years now, adding 2 published books and patterns to the list of handmade wares available in her shop. I was beyond honored that she agreed to do an interview with us this month, and blown away by her thoughtful responses. Everyone, let's take a minute to meet Alicia: Do you think you’ve changed as a blogger, writer, and artist since you started blogging? Has your view of the world shifted? Yes and no. When I first started blogging in 2005, I was having a really hard time in my life -- nothing super major but just generally overworking (I owned a boutique at the time), feeling like my energy was completely scattered, feeling like I wasn't in control of my time anymore. And that feeling was sort of the opposite of what I had wanted to achieve with self-employment. I had been a writer all my life and had worked as a book editor -- but before I started blogging I hadn't written a word just for myself in over eight years. So blogging was, in a lot of ways, a return to a version of myself that I had lost along the way. In the moment, it was sort of a direct reaction to these feelings of barely controlled professional chaos I was experiencing: staying organized on the blog helped me re-organize my real life and work in real time, somehow. But in a much larger way it also allowed me to reconnect to an essential part of myself that I had kind of put behind me. I think my reasons for bloging are still exactly the same as they were in 2005. I'm still very selfish about it. I still maintain that it's just a place for me to do and say and show what I want. I still see it as a personal blog and a way of telling my own story to myself. But I do think that since I’ve started it I’ve gained confidence in myself in the larger world in general, and grown to appreciate people in a totally different way. Experiencing the kindness of strangers has changed my life in some ways. I’m very grateful for those lessons. Our lives have become so inundated with the internet - how do you maintain a healthy balance of online vs. offline? Hmmm. In all honesty, it’s not a hard balance for me to find. I don’t feel like I’m on my computer more than I need to be, and it’s off quite a bit. But then, I don’t do Facebook (I have an account but I never use it), don’t do Twitter, don’t get email on my cell phone. I’m turned off probably more than a lot of people I know. I am a horrendously lazy emailer, though. It’s the hardest thing for me. I have a very hard time answering emails and let them pile up to the point of shrieking. It’s awful. There’s something so intimate and wonderful and, well, cozy about your blog. Where do you think this feeling comes from? Originally I chose the name Posie Gets Cozy because the name of my business is Posie, and the blog seemed sort of like a place behind the scenes of my regular work, where I was sort of curling up under a blanket with hot chocolates and just talking to a friend about all manner of randomness, some serious, some silly. It’s kind of the only way I know how to do it. And we truly are comfort-mongers around her. I guess we take our cozy seriously at Paulson Place. If you could tell the you of 5 years ago one thing, what would it be? Ah, boy. I only wish I knew what to tell her. I honestly, honestly don’t know. I’d probably tell her to make some different decisions. I only wish I knew which ones I would have her change. Can you please show us your favorite embroidery project? My latest one is almost always my favorite. Right now that’s the Winterwoods ABCs cross-stitch sampler, which will be available as a kit really soon. I haven’t shown the finished, framed sampler yet, but here’s a sneak peek: For my next project, I think I’m going to do something botanical, on a black background, or something very dark. Like spring popping out of the mud. Name 1 person you would LOVE to meet: (past, present, real or fiction) Joanna Newsom. She is so fearless and original and sincere and thoughtful and so incredibly talented musically, obviously, and so articulate. I listen to her music almost every day and when I see videos of her playing it I feel like her performance is as moving as the music itself. She’s so unique. I've been ready for a little change lately as you can see from my new header and background. My new background is thanks to Aqua Poppy Designs. Isn't it simply darling? She has some really fun and free backgrounds if you're looking for something fresh and new. I haven't jumped in totally and done a major overall but that's definitely in the horizon as I continue to make my blog look more professional and all matchie matchie (can you spell matchie matchie that way? lol). I had so much fun taking pictures of the fabric that it became my inspiration for some change. The majority of the fabric in the pictures are from my collection of Aunt Gracie prints, I'm definitely a fan of Judie Rothermel. I did want you to know that Aunt Gracie's are my biggest collection of fabric and I've been collecting it for 10 years now. You must know that it takes many years to acquire a collection. I remember when it cost $6.39 a yard and now you pay over $2.00 more per yard. I have to admit though that I've been hitting a few fabric stores recently doing a little bit of fabric therapy, okay a lot of therapy but I need therapy so that's okay (smiles). I've been buying some of the newer Aunt Gracie prints along with some other stuff. I'll do more posts about that later. When I was at Broadbents the other day, Laurel showed me a new scrappy quilt book that I just had to buy. One of my requirements for buying a book is that I have to like more than 3-4 quilts in the book for me to buy it. This is the book. You can see it here. This is one of the quilts I'm making. The feedsack quilt pattern inspired me and since I have sooo many Aunt Gracie fabrics I knew it would be the perfect quilt for me to make. This is the block. Just so you know, I did make a few changes... First, I wanted to have red polka dots for the center of the blocks. As you can see I already put together one block. Isn't it so fun? I LOVE it! Second, The block in the book is 12" x 12" and the strips are cut 2 1/2" and my block will finish at 9" x 9" because my strips are cut at 2". You are probably asking WHY! Well, it's because the stacks of strips that you see in the pictures above and below were cut from my stash over two years ago and I wanted to use them. So, I modified the measurements to fit the 2" strips I cut two years ago. I also threw in some of the newer fabrics I've been buying too! I actually like the smaller block better and the red center gives me quiltbumps. I'm all giddy inside! I can't wait to make more of these blocks.

Hi friends! Today I have a really special (long) post for you! Today I want to share a quilt that took me two years and about 85 hours to complete - my Postage Stamp quilt! I got so many questions on Instagram every time I posted pictures of this project so I will try to cover all the FAQ's here. First, let me start at the beginning... THE INSPIRATION My grandmother passed away in October 2019. She was the one who taught me how to quilt and who my pattern company is named after. After she passed, my mom and aunt asked if I would finish a couple of the quilts she had been working on so we could give them to family members. This red, yellow, and green 9-Patch quilt one was one of them. I don't know the name of the pattern but I know it came from a magazine. I remember her working on this quilt over the years and I know each individual square finished at 3/4". Can you believe that!?! The quilt top was finished many years ago so I just got it longarm quilted (with a Baptist Fan pattern) and then I bound it by hand. The back was white with colorful buttons and the binding is black with red and yellow flowers on it, as you can see here. The backing fabric was hanging with the quilt top in her closet and I believe I picked out the binding fabric from her stash. This quilt went to my aunt Janet and her husband Dave. The other quilt I finished at that time (I have 2 more I still need to finish!) was this little baby quilt. I think the squares finished at 1-1/4". My aunt and I chose the back and binding fabrics from my grandmother's fabric stash and then I had it longarm quilted with the Interlocking Orange Peel panto by Karlee Porter. This quilt went to one of my cousins. So after finishing both of those quilts made by my grandmother, I was inspired. I never thought I would make a Postage Stamp quilt; too intense for me! But I got the itch around that time to make something with tiny squares and a little while later I made my first blocks. CUTTING I cut 1-1/2" squares that would finish at 1" each. I did not do all my cutting at once. I found that I liked to cut batches of squares, both bright and white, whenever I was running low or got tired of the ones I had in my pile. It was a nice way to break up all of the sewing. When I was actively working on my Postage Stamp quilt I would keep piles of squares by my machine so I could easily grab and sew. I didn't put too much thought into what fabric went where. I just tried to space out colors to create balance. When I needed a break from that project I simply put the squares in a ziplock bag. They didn't get wrinkly so it was easy to pick up where I left off the next time I was ready to work on my quilt. FABRIC I used lots of different whites, creams and low volumes for my "whites". If you look closely at some of the following pictures you'll be able to tell. From far away, everything reads as white but the quilt still has a really scrappy feel to it. Plus it was a great way to use up scraps! As far as the brights go, I used alll the colors. My only requirement was there had to be enough contrast between the brights and whites. There are several fabrics of my grandmother's in this quilt. Including a few squares that have remnants of her embroidery! Those are my favorite! ASSEMBLY There are several ways to assemble a Postage Stamp quilt. You can strip-piece units together. But since I used scraps for all of my pieces I cut squares and sewed them together one-by-one. I didn't mind; in fact I preferred to do it that way so it would be extra scrappy! But of course, you could strip piece if you wanted. For the most part, I chain-pieced rows together to make regular, small 9-Patches (above). I made some that had brights in the corners and some that had whites in the corners. This was such mindless sewing and I quite enjoyed it! Immediate satisfaction! Then I sewed nine of those 9-Patches together to make big 9-Patches that had 81 squares in each block. I figured out it took me about 45 minutes to make a block (maybe about an hour with cutting). Towards the end of this project, I switched from making small 9-Patches to just chain piecing squares together to make a row for the big 9-Patches. I started by sewing tons of pairs of bright and white squares together. When I got bored I separated the pairs and then sewed them together to make units of 4 squares each. Once I had all those sewn together I sewed 2 of those units together plus one extra square to make a row of 9 squares. PRESSING After I made each block row, I pressed the seam allowances toward the dark/bright fabrics. After I sewed the rows together, I pressed the seams open. I pressed everything as I went. It may seem daunting but I honestly got faster the more I did it. It really wasn't too bad. I definitely recommend pressing as you go and pressing the seams open will help your quilt lay nice and flat. Quick side note here: I never pin when I piece. If you're really accurate in your cutting and piecing all of your seam allowances should be able to nest together nicely. I'm sure that saved me a lot of time while making this quilt. I have some tips saved in my Instagram highlight bubbles on precision piecing and cutting. Check it out @gigis_thimble. As I worked on this project, I found it helpful to set little goals for myself. I started by making two blocks and kept trying to double the number of blocks I had until I finished. One month I challenged myself to make 100 little 9-Patches and towards the end of this project, I challenged myself to make 1 big 9-Patch a day until I was done making all of my blocks. I always tell myself, "A little progress every day adds up to big results!" and that is definitely the case with a Postage Stamp quilt! Because there are a gazillion seams in this quilt, it is heavier than normal. The seams can start to stretch apart because of the weight and become harder to match up. So I would recommend that you make two halves of your quilt; press the row seams and then sew the 2 halves together to complete your quilt. Here I am at the halfway point: And here is the finished quilt top. An exciting moment! FINISHING I bound the quilt in this red and white gingham fabric that I had in my stash. I also had this rainbow fabric in my stash that I had bought recently for another project (that didn't turn out how I wanted so I gave it away). The fabric is 55218-20 from the fabric line Shine On by Bonnie and Camille for Moda. I used it for the back of my quilt and I love it. My friend Jen Ostler quilted it with the Scribble Hearts panto. She always hides an object in her quilting for her clients to find so this time she did a rainbow. It took me forever to find but I think it's darling. It's much easier to find from the backside of the quilt than the front! One of my Instagram followers sent me a picture of her Postage Stamp quilt that had been quilted with the Scribble Hearts panto and I thought it was sweet and fun so I decided to do the same on mine. I love the quilting community where we can all inspire and learn from each other! I've been buying custom quilt labels from Ever Emblem for the last couple of years. I get the 2" cotton fold-over, sew-in labels and I've been really happy with them. They're really inexpensive and a quick way to label your quilt. Well that's it! Hello happy people! Today I'm excited to share with you my finished Farmer's Wife Quilt! It's been away for a while...being hand quilted by a group of ladies in Provo, UT that use their proceeds to buy supplies for patients at the State Hospital. It was gone for about 8 months. I got it back mid November-ish and finished binding it over the holidays! It really meant a lot to me to have this hand quilted. I wanted it to have that antique feel and because I know myself and know that realistically I would never actually do it I decided to hire these ladies! I'm so happy that the money went to a good cause and the money was well worth it (a fraction of the cost of what it would be to have it custom, machine quilted - it was $200 for those of you dying to know :). They quilted in the ditch around each piece and they even quilted the dashed lines on my border fabric - which initially they said they wouldn't be able to do. I was thrilled when I picked it up and realized I wouldn't have to do any more quilting myself! Whew! Big sigh of relief :) Some people have asked how much fabric they would need to make something like this and that's really hard to answer since it's so scrappy. I just started off with a dozen or so fat quarters and then added more when I needed some variety. Scraps are perfect for this project since you only need a little bit for each block. Below are some rough numbers for everything besides the blocks - since I did do my sashing a little different than the Farmer's Wife book instructed. Finished Quilt Size: 79" x 100" Finished Block Size: 6" Number of Blocks: 83 Fabric Requirements (I've included a little extra in the yardage to allow for shrinkage and squaring up. WOF = width of fabric). Number of Sashing Strips: 192 total (You will need 2 yards of 42" wide fabric. Cut 6 1/2" x WOF strips, subcut into 2" x 6 1 /2" rectangles). Sashing Squares: 110 total I did white with a red print for the 82 center squares and solid white for the 28 outside edge squares (the white outside edge squares are eventually trimmed off - creating triangles - before sewing on the inner border fabric). (You will need 1/3 yard of white with red print fabric and 1/4 yard of solid white). Inner Border: 8 strips (You will need 1/2 yard. Cut 2" x WOF strips). Outer Border: 8 strips (You will need 1 3/4 yards. Cut 6 1/2" x WOF strips). Binding: 9 strips (You will need 3/4 yard. Cut 2 1/2" x WOF strips). Backing: 7 1/2 yards (cut into 3 pieces, 42" x 90" each) I hope that answers some questions for those of you just getting started! Here's a few more pictures of mine... My backing is just a vintage-y red and cream print. I love it. And although you may not see me using too much red for the next little while, this is one of my greatest finished quilts.
