As a primary teacher, it can be very difficult fitting in grammar instruction into your day. I also have a little secret you might not know about me. I used to loathe teaching grammar. Can any of you relate? It's so difficult to even WANT to teach grammar when we have so many other things we could be doing with our day. Plus, many of us are expected to "spiral" it in with the many other subjects we are expected to teach throughout the day. Although all school districts, programs, and teachers are different, I have found something that students love doing, and that is applying new information into something called an interactive notebook!! And so I created these for grammar...and the students loved them!
From my experience, students will take a hands-on activity over a less interactive one any day, and I bet some of you would agree! Little minds wander

Hey hey there! I know that many of you are enjoying long and lazy summer days. I also know that many of you are still trucking away in your classrooms and my thoughts are with you! I wanted to give you some extra insight into Rooted in Reading and especially give you an idea of how I set up my interactive notebooks with my students. If you have NO idea what I am talking about when I say "Rooted in Reading" read THIS POST here to see all about the 2nd grade version. You can also look at the Bundle or the August unit by itself. Amy did an amazing job on the previews so we hope that answers a lot of your questions! If this is your first time using interactive notebooks, having them organized from the beginning can help you avoid a lot of headaches down the line. Most 8 and 9 yr olds need the extra help with organization (goodness my 34 yr old husband needs a lot of help with organization), and I think these notebooks will be a great way to scaffold this skill! Step 1: Clearly mark the covers of your notebooks. We always had several notebooks for different subjects so this helped lessen confusions. I have included a color and black and white cover that you can print on bright paper if you would like! Step 2: Print out tab dividers on Astrobright paper AND laminate. I promise the laminating step is key to having these bad boys last! Step 3: After cutting dividers out use clear packing tape to put your dividers into your notebooks. The order I chose was Anchor Charts, Comprehension Activities, Vocabulary Words, Daily Deep Dive, and Grammar. Before doing this you will want to think about how long you want to use the notebooks. I personally liked a notebook per semester so I would put enough pages between each divider to get me through the semester! I also suggest lining up the tabs so only the bold words stick out the side- cover up the cursive word with the clear tape. If you are using a standard size composition notebook AND all five tabs, you will also need to overlap them a little! Step 4: Glue in the book list to the inside of the notebook on the first page. Either one or two copies depending on how many books you plan on covering using this book. I LOVE this addition because I think students will love looking back over the list of books that they have so lovingly studied this year. I also think the genre column is a key component for test-taking skills! You can find all the materials I used in a freebie found in my store Here! If you have other great ideas for setting up notebooks, we would love to hear them! If you are on instagram use our hashtag "RootedinReading3rd" and Amy and I will definitely check you out! Phew now that we have those kids all set up, we can talk about YOU- the teacher! My personal favorite way to store my units is in binders. I spent a couple hours one morning and printed all four weeks of August out. I went a head and laminated my anchor charts and prepped the nonfiction mini-readers so the students can see an example. Don't they look pretty?!?! We even have binder spines for each books so you can feel extra organized! You can find everything you need for organizing your teacher binders in the freebie below from Amy! Hi all!! I hope you all have enjoyed your summer as much as I have. Mine was busy, busy, busy and packed full of changes. I'll save all that for another post, but I wanted to publicly address some questions that I've recently received from several readers who are interested in starting Spanish interactive notebooks in their classes this upcoming school year. Thanks guys for inspiring me to jump back on the blog train and share what's worked for me in regards to using Spanish interactive notebooks in my classes. I'm going to tackle this Q & A style. :) Q: What is an interactive notebook? A: You'll get varied answers on this and my own definition will probably continue to evolve, but, at this point, an interactive notebook in my Spanish class is a notebook with which students can literally "interact" in order to learn a concept. I give input (generally via PowerPoint notes) to students and then the students "respond" in some sort of manner. It is NOT just a notebook with worksheets glued inside. It generally includes some sort flipable or foldable template, flip book, graphic organizer or a hands-on activity which is added directly to the notebook. Q: What do I need for INBs? A: I recommend the black (or any color cover) composition books. You can choose to have students add a cover to the composition. I have several cover choices (along with some sample templates) posted for FREE in my TpT store HERE. I find you're less likely to lose pages with a composition notebook than if you were using spiral notebooks. You also need scissors and glue sticks (or glue) for each student. I know that some teachers prefer glue over glue sticks, but I used glue sticks and never had a problem with things coming un-glued. In my opinion, there's less mess potential using glue sticks. Students also have colored pencils and highlighters to use with the notebooks. Q: How do you organize your notebook? A: I print a blank table of contents template for my students and have them attach this to the inside front cover of their notebooks. Students then number the pages of their notebooks (front and back). This all happens before we do anything else with the notebook. Each time we begin a new page, we title the page and add the title and corresponding page number to the table of contents. I am a stickler for having students keep up with the table of contents. It makes accessing previously learned info much easier as I can quickly tell them to go to page ____ for an explanation to their question. Some teachers like to follow a format of left side/right side for teacher input/student output. I may get there someday, but right now, I'm not nearly organized enough for that. Just being honest with you guys. ;) We just keep going on whatever page we leave off on. Inside the back cover we glue a rubric. More on this below. :) Last year, we began our notebooks, with a 5 Reasons to Study Spanish Assignment. You can see more about that HERE. I will definitely use that one again. Q: How do you assess your notebook? A: I will sometimes grade individual pages or activities within the notebook as daily or homework grades. At the end of each quarter, I collect notebooks and they receive a notebook grade (which assesses things like completeness, accurate table of contents, effort, etc. using a rubric). This grade counts as a quiz grade each quarter. Click the picture below to link to the table of contents and editable rubric that I use to set up and organize my notebooks that available in my TpT store. Stay tuned for Part 2 on Starting Interactive Notebooks in Spanish Classes. I'll have that posted later this week. In that post I'll talk about what goes in the notebook (and what doesn't) and how these have helped my students. UPDATE: Part 2 is now posted HERE. :) SaveSave
