I spent my weekend working on 2nd Day of 2nd Grade resources! I use to do this back when I taught 2nd grade and then a couple of years ago I started celebrating the 3rd Day of 3rd Grade. Colored Rainbow Eggs Experiment Still have left over Easter eggs? Turn them into rubber eggs! The eggs go for a soak in vinegar for 2-3 days and the outer shell dissolves, leaving a rubber like skin that can bounce! Find out more about this experiment here! Materials ready! You can make the eggs colored or plain! Fill the cups with vinegar and get your eggs ready. Add in the food coloring! Here, we're doing some colored eggs and one plain egg to compare! Gently add in the eggs and let them start soaking! The eggs will soak for 48-72 hours! Time to take the eggs out! The colors are SO neat! Make sure to GENTLY wash off the colored eggs so you don't get food coloring all over! You can compare the colored eggs and the plain egg! You can also compare a regular eggs to a rubber egg! Have fun comparing Fiction and Nonfiction texts in the classroom with these easy to prepare ideas! If so, we have a few activities you can try out to help your kiddos see the similarities and differences between the two types of text. Class Discussion + Anchor Chart Select 2 books on one topic. As a class, take a picture walk through both books. Decide which is fiction and which is nonfiction. Have your kiddos help you make post it notes to label their reasons. You could also divide into groups and have each group make their own chart using 2 books. Daily 5 Bucket Book Sort Have your students sort books in their Daily 5 buckets (or independent reading buckets) into 2 piles; fiction / nonfiction. Once all of the students have their Daily 5 buckets sorted into 2 piles, do a gallery walk around the room to have students look at everyone's sorting. This leads to great conversation. Scholastic Book Club Sort Use a Scholastic Book Club flyer to have students sort book covers into 2 columns; fiction / nonfiction. One tip for this is to check in with students after sorting but prior to gluing so you can clear up any misconceptions kiddos may have. Practice! Gummy Bear Experiment The kiddos LOVED this one...probably more so because we gave them the left over gummy bears, but it was fun to keep checking on how the gummy bears were changing through the day. We simply filled four clear, short cups with water and added in a bit of each additional ingredient. The shorter cups help for better viewing by students! For more information about this experiment, visit here! Materials ready! Get the each cup ready with the liquids and/or mixtures. Drop in a gummy bear! We liked to keep the cups on the mat so we could remember the type of liquid in each cup. After about a whole day in the liquids, it's time to take the gummy bears out! Walking Rainbow Experiment More Rainbows for March! This experiment is a super easy set up and gives a good opportunity for observation over time! Kiddos will love this colorful experiment and be excited to see this fun way to mix colors! Find more about this experiment here! Materials ready! It was recommended to use select a size paper towels. They are much easier to fold into the correct form! And you only need 3 cups of colored water to start this experiment! All set up and the colored water is already starting to absorb into the paper towels. More water is being absorbed! This is a bit into the experiment...around a half hour. So this is a slow experiment and great to observe! Some colored water begins to fill an empty cup! Wonder what color the colored waters will make when they mix in this cup? Colors mixing! We just started our fractions unit this week and one my teammies found Cara Carroll's fractionpillar activity which you can read more about here! Anyway, I was thinking I wanted to try something different and I was reminded of my friend Lauren, who posted this on TPT recently, which you can buy here. Isn't it cute!? But this got me thinking that instead of a fractionpillar, I wanted to do a fraction bot!! I cut out four different shapes with our die cutter in different colors and instructed students to build a fraction robot with them! I told them they could even cut those shapes into parts if they needed to. Then, they had to write what fraction of the shapes were square, rectangle, triangle, or hexgons! You could adapt by doing the fraction of colors used, or even both for a little challenge! Here is how some of them turned out! I love this little short one! Aren't they cute!? Here are the cut outs I used. I actually adapted the bottom part a bit to better suit you guys so I hope you can use it! Happy December, Y'all! This is Chandra from Teaching with Crayons and Curls! This year my firsties have LOVED LOVED LOVED spending the day with a stuffed animal. Our class uses a classroom economy similar to this one from True Life I'm a Teacher and they use their money to purchase coupons. The 'Furry Friend' (spending a day with a stuffed animal) coupon is one of their favorites, so I knew I had to use this to my advantage! Meet our class Behavior Buddies- Listening Lion, Happy Hippo and Positive Pig! Aren't they adorable!? Students earn these Behavior Buddies when they are showing positive behavior! I usually choose one student per day to spend the day with each stuffed animal. Usually, they are chosen at the end of the day and they get to spend the next school day with that Behavior Buddy. The furry friend stays with them throughout the day in OUR classroom. They don't go to recess, specials, or lunch. Just makes things a little easier (and cleaner!). We've been using them for a few weeks now, and my students have started nominating each other to spend the day with a Behavior Buddy! I mean, how adorable and KIND is that!? It all started with one sweet little firstie saying, "Mrs. Dills, I think Sarah should get Listening Lion because she has been such a great listener today!" Yep, I made a HUGE deal about that! When students earn a Behavior Buddy for showing positive behavior, I also want to make sure that this is communicated to their families! So, I created certificates that the student can bring home to show their family! It's a great way to build that positive school-to-home relationship! I ordered all of my furry friends off Amazon. But, you can grab stuffed animals anywhere! Wal-Mart, Target, and the Dollar Store. There are many different animal options in my pack!
