Hace un par de semanas hicimos un pequeño recorrido, con mayor detenimiento, por Australia. Con un pequeño cuaderno de explorador y lápiz en mano, fuimos dibujando y escribiendo aquello que íbamos descubriendo y recordando de nuestra anterior vuelta al mundo. Primero conocimos las máscaras de las tribus aborígenes, que destacan por sus formas y decoración. Los canguros llamaron nuestra atención y no por sus saltos, sino por su bolsillo donde vive y se alimenta el bebé canguro hasta que es mayor. Los fondos marinos australianos y sus arrecifes de coral son unos de los grandes tesoros de nuestro planeta dignos de admiración y que debemos proteger. Los simpáticos koalas despertaron la sonrisa de todos. Una foto con mamá koala y su pequeñún para no olvidar este gran viaje. Justo al lado de Australlia, concretamente en el "hall" del cole, se encuentra la exposición de torres hechas con cajas que cada clase decoró, en la semana cultural, sobre su país. La mayoría no las habían visto y se sorprendieron bastante. Buscamos los países que habíamos visitado, encontramos nuestra caja sobre China.... incluso algunos curiosearon durante un rato por la exposición. Una exposición muy cultural que despertó el interés y la curiosidad de todos los peques. Antes de regresar nos hicimos una foto de grupo en el "aeropuerto"..... y es que todos los días no tenemos la suerte de poder disfrutar de un viaje de esta categoría. Días después hicimos un trabajo en el que cada uno, utilizando su cuaderrno de explorador como ayuda, debía hacer un listado con 10 animales de Australia, puediendo pedir ayuda a los compañeros. Muchos se atrevieron ya con las minúsculas. Para finalizar y tener un recuerdo de nuestro viaje hicimos máscaras como las de las tribus australianas. La seño les repartió diferentes modelos de máscaras y ellos las dibujaron y decoraron libremente con rotulador, pintura y bastoncillos. Nos quedaron de lo más "pintorescas". Seguro que los aborígenes australianos las pueden utilizar para carnavales.

Hi, Teaching Friends! Well, this is the PERFECT week to write about field trips, which coincidentally is the next chapter in our book study, Worksheets Don't Grow Dendrites. What teacher doesn't love a good field trip? Well, okay, maybe not the hour each way on the school bus, but even that can be fun if you get your kids singing. Even just watching their excited faces can be fun, don't you think? In my opinion, the learning potential of a field trip is unbeatable. The author Marcia Tate has a very inclusive list of the ways that field trips help our students learn. Each chapter in this book includes a section of quotes, "The Theoretical Framework". My favorite in this chapter: "Enhancing higher-order thinking skills, refining observation and questioning skills, and increasing the confidence and attitude of students are all benefits of field trips." (Davis, 2002) That's a good one to keep in your back pocket the next time an administrator asks you to justify the expense of a field trip! Here's why this is the perfect week for me to write this post. I'd like to share with you today some of the ways "field trips" have floated through my life in the past week, and how they relate to what I read in this chapter. My husband and I had the opportunity to hear a presentation by a local historian this week. A lifelong resident, his presentation included a picture of the one-room schoolhouse he attended. Then he showed us a picture of the farm that used to be across the street from it. "We went there on a field trip," he said. "It was the only field trip I ever went on. We walked across the street. I still remember it." This man is nearly eighty years old and still fondly remembers this field trip. Field trips create lasting memories. They are significant events in a student's life. The second way field trips touched my life this week was through a mini-vacation we took with our daughter, son-in-law, and their three children. Our grandchildren are 3, 5, and 7, and are homeschooled. We spent three days in Lancaster, PA. One of the big highlights for the kids, of course, was swimming in the hotel pool every day, but each day we also went some place interesting, little homeschool field trips, you might say. One day, we went to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. A phenomenal learning experience, this museum is like a huge terminal (over 100,000 square feet inside and out) where you can wander around among more than 100 locomotives and cars. There are docents positioned in and near some of the equipment, but you can also self-tour via the info kiosks or QR codes. Look at these photos - so much potential for math learning! Can't get to this museum for your field trip? Your students can see more here, and the site is loaded with lots more info for your students. Our second "field trip" was to the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Factory in Lititz. The children had some schema for this, since they're big fans of Mr. Rogers and one of his wonderful trips was to a pretzel factory. Picture their faces when, after a few moments of looking around, they realized that this was THE pretzel factory where the one-and-only Mr. Rogers had filmed the episode! Field trips take on new meaning when you provide your students with prior knowledge. The pretzel factory was a hands-on experience... Field trips, like lessons in class, become more meaningful when active learning is part of the experience. Here's what E, the five year old, did after the pretzel factory experience. Your students will continue to apply their learning after a field trip. Whether your field trip is to the Smithsonian or your school yard, here's a way for you to help your little learners consolidate their learning afterwards. If you can find a few minutes for your students to complete these when you get back to the classroom, this is a handy tool to send to your families to help them continue the conversation when their child gets home. Farul din Alexandria a fost construit în secolul al III-lea î.Hr. în Egipt pe insula Pharos de lângă orașul antic Alexandria (de la această insulă provine și cuvântul românesc „far”). La început farul a fost doar un simbol al portului, apoi a devenit indicator pentru marinari. Consiliul suprem pentru antichităţi din Egipt a avizat favorabil noul proiect al preşedintelui Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi ce constă în reconstruirea celebrului Far din Alexandria, informează lefigaro.fr. Autorităţile egiptene mai au nevoie doar de acordul guvernatorului regiunii Alexandria pentru a putea să înceapă lucrările de construcţie a unei replici a Farului din Alexandria, considerat una dintre cele şapte minuni ale Antichităţii. Distrus în 1303 de un cutremur, farul ar putea fi reconstruit în curând în Egipt, a spus Moustapha Amin, preşedintele Consiliului suprem pentru antichităţi, pentru cotidianul Youm7. După anunţul făcut în luna martie de preşedintele Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi, referitor la proiectul construirii unei noi capitale administrative a ţării sale, apoi cel din aprilie, ce vizează realizarea unui al doilea Canal de Suez, egiptenii pregătesc un al treilea proiect faraonic: construirea unei replici în mărime naturală a Farului din Alexandria. Construcţia ar trebui să fie ridicată, după ce proiectul va fi validat definitiv, pe insula Pharos. Graţie dimensiunilor sale şi unui joc de lumini foarte eficient, farul lumina un perimetru de până la 50 de kilometri în jurul său. Astăzi, câteva fragmente din acel far distrus de cutremur sunt încă vizibile, întrucât au fost utilizate la construirea citadelei Qaitbay. Singura supravieţuitoare dintre "Cele şapte minuni ale lumii antice" este Marea Piramidă din Gizeh. Farul din Alexandria i-a ghidat pe marinari vreme de aproape 18 secole, cu ajutorul unor oglinzi reflectorizante pe timpul zilei şi luminilor unor focuri pe timpul nopţii. Replica edificiului va fi construită la doar câteva zeci de metri sud-vest de amplasamentul monumentului original, ocupat în prezent de citadela Qaitbay. Secretarul Comitetului Permanent pentru Antichităţi egiptene, Moustapha Amin, a declarat pentru Cairo Post că membrii comitetului au aprobat, săptămâna trecută, "un proiect mai vechi, propus anterior de guvernoratul regiunii Alexandria, ce are ca scop readucerea la viaţă a farului". Un "studiu de fezabilitate" pentru acest proiect ar fi fost deja propus guvernoratului din Alexandria, care urmează să ia o decizie în săptămânile viitoare. Ridicat în jurul anului 280 î.e.n., Farul din Alexandria a avut o înălţime cuprinsă între 110 şi 130 de metri. A fost vreme de mai multe secole cea mai înaltă clădire construită vreodată de oameni. "Monumentul original era compus din trei părţi: o secţiune joasă, pătrată, care reprezenta nucleul central, o secţiune intermediară octogonală şi o secţiune circulară în vârf", a explicat profesorul de arheologie Fathy Khourshid pentru Cairo Post. Puternic avariată în urma unor cutremure produse între secolul al III-lea e.n. şi secolul al XII-lea e.n., construcţia a sfârşit prin a se prăbuşi la începutul secolului al XIV-lea. Fragmente din far au fost apoi utilizate pentru construirea citadelei Qaitbay. Altele au fost descoperite pe fundul mării, în apropiere de portul din Alexandria, în anii 1990.
