An Elegant Emerald Green and Black Wedding at the Vintage Estate
I recently posted some illustrations by the great watercolor artist John Gannam, who had an astute eye for color. But before he became famous for his use of color, Gannam did hundreds of black and white spot illustrations in the 1930s and 40s for lesser publications. Many artists treated such assignments as hack work to rush through. However, Gannam applied himself and learned valuable lessons from black and white pictures which served him well when he later painted color illustrations. Specifically, he learned from black and white illustrations to master value, which refers to the darkness or lightness of a color. Working in black and white, Gannam taught himself to control the "value structure" of his pictures, balancing blacks and whites and grays. He mastered tonality and contrast and learned to make his pictures eminently readable. I find Gannam's control over the value scale in pictures such as this one absolutely astounding: If you don't think this is hard to do, try it sometime. For years, Gannam refined his color skills by doing black and white pictures. As Gannam's career advanced, color slowly crept into his illustrations: When Gannam later graduated to full page color illustrations, he had great appreciation for the values of the colors he used. Much of the strength of his color paintings came from the lessons he learned during that long apprenticeship doing black and white pictures.

It has snowed so much! School keeps getting canceled, not that I miss school, but I do miss getting out of the house for something other than work :( Although, I do not want to repeat the walking through paths filled with muddy sludge, trying to make it to my classes, I kind of wish we had classes. I also am worried about the assignments and classwork that are piling up. I am looking for things to keep me busy. There is only so much shoveling one can do! I was looking through Harper's Weekly Newspaper from February 16th 1861 and found a few cute etchings. I can barely ice skate normally, I can only imagine trying to skate with hoops and a dress on. I always joke that sometime I will go to the local ice skating rink, all dressed up Civil War style (We've been bowling in period dress, other bowlers are surprisingly polite to you.) I wonder if they would allow us to skate? I'm guessing falling would be a big affair as you could end up exposing some things you'd rather not. Ice Skating was a popular winter pastime in the 1800s for all economic classes in the United States. Frozen ponds and lakes were commandeered by anxious skaters and many guides teaching skating were available. The rinks, being natural, were not as smooth as the ice we know today. They had to skate on all of the natural frozen bumps and the grooves of the other skaters. Some ladies brought chairs with them to be pushed about on the ice by a sweetheart or brother. A good engraving of this can be seen in The American Boy's Book (1864) as well as period instructions and diagrams for learning how to ice skate. There is also a virtual ice skate museum which has photographs of various historical ice skates. I am partial to the Holland 1850s ice skates on the main page there. They are so dainty! I don't know of any lakes or ponds that allow ice skating. But I think I've had enough frozen outdoor activity. :D This is a picture of my sister, after we had successfully located the mailbox. Ahoy Thar Mateys: Celebrate “Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19th in style and your students will want to swab their desks! These activities are sure to have ye class using de pirate jargon an havin some fun whilst integratin readin and writin. It might even be fun to dress as a pirate, and ask the children to bring in any pirate books they have to share with the class…maybe even a pirate hat or two would help set the scene. However there is a template to make a 3-D Pirate hat that you can use for this idea! Hey, Let's make any day and fun day and Talk like a Pirate!! You can also make a 3-D pirate hat with the directions included in this packet! Everyone can go home as a “pirate” Ideas: Share the book: “How I Became a Pirate” by Melinda Long/ Illustrated by David Shannon. (It is the best fiction pirate book out there for young readers!) Before you read the story, give children “Thinking Partners”. As you read stop every few minutes to have children discuss the story by asking questions that encourage making predictions, inferences and cause and effect. As you ask these questions, have the partners share their ideas and then share a few out with the class. This Think/Pair/ Share is a great way for all the children to be engaged in the story as you read. Think of what strategies your class needs and ask questions accordingly. When you are finished with the story you may start to use the pirate jargon which is listed on the next page in the packet and below in this description. Feel free to look up more phrases on the internet, but these are the most common and appropriate for young learners. You may even want them to infer what each phrase means as you use them. This will get your class thinking critically while having fun. Matryoshka is a traditional wooden doll that usually consists of several dolls inside each other (same shape, but different sizes).
