Every year has it's ups and downs and 1825 Regency England was no different. The down side of the year was the Stock Market crash which started with the Bank of England due to speculative investments in South America. The financial crisis caused the closing of 6 London Banks and 60 country banks. The year did end on an up-note, with the completion of the first public railroad in England, using steam locomotives. The Stockton-Darlington line was only 25 miles long; however it was the start of the new Steam Age which later change the face of England as it moves from the Late Regency into the Victorian period. This still will not happen for another dozen years so; for now we will continue to enjoy the Regency fashions of Ackermann's Repository with the beautiful dresses of 1825. My personal pick of the 1825 Ackermann's Repository fashion plates I loved the ribbon lacing, trims and color of this ball gown. Can't you just picture how this skirt would swoosh as she glides across a ball room? Antique 18th Century pearlware English Staffordshire Tea Saucer Hand Painted Rose. Nice antique 18th Century pearlware English Staffordshire tea saucer with in the “Queens Rose” pattern of pink flowers with green leaves. The border has a repeating diaper pattern in pink. The back shows some blue pooling around the footrim. The saucer measure 5.5" wide. Most likely dates to c. 1780 - 1825 period, possibly a Leed's example, but many British factories made rose decorated pearlware during this period. Condition: there is overall staining and crazing, several chips on the rim, wear to paint. The earthenware has overall staining from tea. View all photos. All photos taken in natural sunlight.

Soulacroix" (lower right) A charming trio sits down for afternoon tea in this enchanting work by renowned costume painter Charles-Joseph-Frédéric Soulacroix. A master at depicting the silks and satins so popular among the fashionable elite of his age, Soulacroix has attired his coquettish young ladies in gowns that shimmer with realistic, intricate detail. The intimacy of the tableau and the extravagant surroundings make this enchanting oil on canvas all the more enticing. A superb record of the lives of the affluent French elite, Soulacroix's costumed figures embody the elegance and luxury of the most fashionable French salons. Soulacroix was arguably the most famous and accomplished painter of this idealized genre, referred to as the “Silk and Satins School” of the costume painters. Few could match the remarkable level of detail and realism he imparted onto each sumptuous canvas. In the present example, the gleaming folds of the ladies’ gowns appear smooth to the touch, and one can almost feel the many other lush textures of their opulent environment. Charles Joshua Chaplin (8 June 1825–30 January 1891) was a French painter and engraver. His father was English and his mother French, and he only became a naturalized Frenchman in 1886, although he worked in France all his life. He was a pupil at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1840, and he regularly visited the studio of Michel-Martin Drolling, whose pupils included Paul Baudry, Jean-Jacques Henner and Jules Breton.
