Getting rid of those Cuttlebug folder lines has been a popular topic. Jackie wrote to me a while back, telling me about another way that she'd found for avoiding those lines. I wanted to mention it here because I tried it today and think it's another good alternative. At the far right is a border embossed the regular way. It shows that line that can be so irritating. The embossing in the center is the one I embossed using a craft stick. The one on the left is one that I did by using the following sandwich in my Big Shot: multipurpose platform open to Tab 2, border folder with cardstock inside, silicone embossing mat, clear plate. The beauty of this last method is that you probably already have everything you need. If I looked VERY closely, I could see a very faint line made by each edge. I don't think that you could see them in the photo. The embossing is also just a bit less crisp. I think that the differences are small though, and the ease of using just a silicone mat makes up for them. So add that in as yet another way to emboss with these folders and avoid the annoying lines. Thanks, Jackie! Now this is a tip that is probably useful only for Big Shot/Big Kick users, but I thought this was a neat time-saver. I'd read somewhere about being able to cut and emboss Nestabilities dies in one pass by using the Sizzix crease pad. I wish I could remember where I'd seen it, but it was a while back and I didn't get a chance to try it until this afternoon. Just know that this is not an idea that I'm claiming to have come up with myself--I wanted to share it though. What I did was use the following stack: my multipurpose platform on Tab 2, clear cutting plate, oval scalloped Nestabilities die with cutting side up, cardstock, blue Sizzix crease pad. So in short, I substituted the crease pad for the clear cutting plate that would normally be at the top of my stack. One pass through the machine, and you can see in the photo that the die did indeed both cut and emboss my scalloped oval shape. I love this because it's so quick and easy. No changing stacks. Just one pass. Very cool. Hope that Big Shot/Big Kick users find these tips helpful. :-) Edited to add: I've posted about cutting and embossing Nestabilities in one pass using the Cuttlebug, too. Hello everyone! Finally a few minutes to put together the other tutorial, the Spellbinder one that I promised some time back! I started with a piece of card that measured 8 inches by 12 inches. Make a score line in the centre so that the finished card will measure 6 " x 8" in size when folded. Next, tape your chosen die (I'm using the Parisian Motif here) with the cutting ridge down on the inside of the left side of the scored card. Tape the die with removable tape (I like the Scotch brand) so that it won't tear your card and get it close to the edge of the card Next, you will need to make a score line from the die upwards to the edge of the card and from the die downwards to the edge of the card. The score line needs to be in the centre of the die. The Parisian die has a small notch when taped in this direction that allows you to find the centre easily. Next, you will turn your card with the taped die upside down on your base plate so that you can no longer see the actual die, but you should still be able to see the score line that you made above and below the die. This is the line to which you will need to line up the cutting plate. Normally when cutting a die you would cover the entire piece with the cutting plate, but we only want half of the die to actually cut so the other half of the die will remain uncovered as we run it through the machine. When you finish passing it through the machine it should look like this when you remove the cutting plate. Next step is to emboss the entire piece. So you will cover all of it this time with the tan mat and then the pink embossing plate and run it back through the Grand Calibur. This will bring out the detail on the cut half and leave the other half nicely embossed into your card to complete the design of the Parisian (or whatever your chosen die may be) die template. Carefully remove your taped die now and you will find a half cut and a half embossed design. Remove the pieces from the cut die that may still need to be poked out. Leave the embossed side as is. Next you are going to fold your card in half on the original centre score line. The back of the cut die should be facing up at this point like it is in this picture. On the score lines that are above and below the die, you are going to fold the card flap backwards but allow the cut portion of the die to swing under so that it will be facing the right side up. This is perhaps a better pic showing how I am folding it backwards at the score lines but I am using my hand to push the cut portion of the die outward as I fold backwards. This is what your card should look like when you fold the scored lines (give them a nice crease with a bone folder) and you have flipped the cut section so that it is not right side up. In this pic I am trying to show that there will usually be a piece in your die that is on the centre line. You will have to cut by hand the fall out piece so that half of it is completely gone and on the embossed side it should remain intact so as not to disrupt the overall look of the die on that side. You now have the entire base piece done so that you can decorate the rest of the card as desired. Here is the same card using the Holly Motifs and Accents and I have decorated it using borders and corners and smaller dies. You can use this tutorial for any of the fancy Spellbinder dies and it looks wonderful! I hope you will give it a try. All for now, Sue x

I've been trying to win her stuff on ebay for some time, but I finally gave up and commisioned as piece. Isn't he just the cutest? He needs a girlfriend though. Maybe next year. And this is Gabriella Goode Grimm Witch from Olde Cape Primitives by Kaf Grimm, yet another artist I adore. I plan to eventually get a whole coven of these. I suspect that most of you are stopping over from the Paper Crafts Connection blog where I had a post up talking about all of the fun crafting holidays that are coming up in September alone. If not, you can check it out HERE if you like. In my post, I shared a card that had some embossing on it that was created with metal dies. Here's a sneak of what the embossing looks like. And as promised I have a quick tutorial today showing you how to use your dies to emboss only on a paper project. 1) Start by arranging your die templates on your paper. To create the sun's rays above, I layered four nesting die templates on a card stock rectangle and embossed with out cutting the shape out. Secure with a low tac (washi tape works wonderfully). 2) Build sandwich using the embossing feature only on you die cutting machine. On the Spellbinders™ Grand Calibur® die cutting machine, you'll be using the base plate, embossing mat and embossing plate. 3) Run sandwich through machine. And that's it. Very simple and a great way to add texture to your project! Variations: If you are embossing a pattern onto your paper using a single die, then you would run the die template through your machine multiple times to obtain a repeat pattern of the single die template. I've talking about how nice it is to cut and emboss Nestabilities dies in one pass using the Sizzix crease pad with my Big Shot. I'd mentioned that there wasn't a good work-around for the Cuttlebug other than perhaps cutting a crease pad down to size. It's too wide for the Cuttlebug otherwise. I went to Michael's armed with two coupons and, among other things, wound up with a fairly cheap crease pad in my bag after I checked out. This red pad is actually just a tad thinner than the blue one that I used in my Big Shot. That was fine since the B plate is a bit thinner than the Big Shot clear cutting plates, too. So, I cut off about 1/4" along the long side of the crease pad. I did this using some Tonic scissors. It was easy peasy. My stack was as follows: A plate, C plate, scalloped circle die with cutting side up, cardstock, crease pad, and two shims, i.e. two of those pieces that form the backing of the Cuttlebug folder packaging. The number of shims you need will vary according to your machine. I've found that I need to shim to make sure that I get a complete cut. The embossing is usually fine. There's the stack and the materials. I'm kinda sorry I missed the full bottom edge in that photo. I'd actually rounded the corners with a Zutter corner rounder. LOL! Hey, it looked really good! And here's a close-up of the results after one pass through the Cuttlebug. Nicely cut and nicely embossed all in a single pass. By the time I'd received the discounts for the coupons, this purchase was easily less than what I would have paid for an embossing pad elsewhere, around $4.00 USD. I think I'll close the chapter on this now. :-)

Months ago I remember someone posing a question about using a Cuttlebug folder to emboss only the top part of a top fold card. At the time I'd thought that the only good way was to roll the "sandwich" part way through the die machine, and then back it out again--admittedly a trial and error process, eh? Last night as I was playing with the new Cuttlebug folders, a lightbulb went on in my head. There's a more foolproof way that I dubbed partial Cuttling. Here's how it works.... Up above are a topfold card and the new Swiss Dots Cuttlebug A2 embossing folder. I positioned the front of the card in the folder. You can fold the back behind the folder, but I just left mine hanging out. Yeah, I'm wild. ;-) This is my Big Shot set-up. I have it open to the layer that I need and I have one clear plate on it ready to go. Now my plan is to emboss the top 2/3 or so of the card, leaving about an inch unembossed at the bottom. Here I've placed the folder and the card so that the part I want to leave unembossed will hang out over the back edge of the platform and won't be compressed as I roll the layers through. Now I've added the clear top (and obviously well-used!) cutting plate, still leaving that last bit outside the "sandwich". Roll it through! You can see that the trailing edge won't be embossed, eh? Really, it won't. See? It really worked. That's just another view of the partial Cuttling of the cardfront. And here's a card that I made using that partially Cuttled card. Just ignore the fact that I somehow managed to catch a thumb or finger in that photo. LOL! I imagine that this should work with the Cuttlebug, too.

BUT....I have done these cards using this technique so I decided to publish it anyways... let's go right away to the tutorial: How to make your own "embossing diffuser" (which embosses "partial" areas and makes shapes) and how to use the "Embossing Diffusers" from the market ... so here we go... A-make your own "embossing diffuser" shape.. How to emboss a "Christmas tree" /triangle from an embossing folder, that would normally emboss the whole paper... step 1: cut 2 triangles (do NOT make any branches, I did it and it was NOT worth it, so just cut a simple triangle) from chipboard and glue them... step 1: Tape the chipboard to the embossing folder step 2: make the following "Sandwich" using the "Cuttlebug" machine: plate A + tan embossing pad + embossing folder (with paper inside) + triangular shape taped to the folder + plate B NOTES: - the chipboard replaces one of the "B" plates - the triangular chipboard shape can be "replace" by ANY shape that you would like to make -IMPORTANT: in this case, you can place the chipboard on top, since it is chipboard it will not be affected by the rollers of your machine. BUT, BE CAREFUL, if you place the "plastic bought" "diffusers" from the market on top, they will be damaged!!!, so refer to sandwich below for "bought diffusers" from Tim Holtz... - the "tan embossing pad" gives extra padding to the sandwich ... step 3: the result: is a triangular shape embossed... step 4: color the embossed area assemble card... View of the group that I made... remember to embellish the envelope too, front and back! B- REVERSE: How to emboss the outer area, leaving "flat" an "oval" shape to be stamped from an embossing folder, that would normally emboss the whole paper... step 1: use the Tim Holtz "embossing diffusers" that you can buy (or make your own with chipboard as I did with my "triangle/tree", simply by die cutting an oval window...)
