I worked at the hand stitching of the binding on Crooked Cobblestones 3 but didn't quite finish it. I wanted to sew the label into the seam allowance before the binding was totally done. I have an HP label program where I designed my labels. Since these quilts will be displayed at an art gallery I didn't get too wordy on the labels. I said I designed the wall art but didn't say I made them. In hindsight I wonder if I needed to say I made them too. I could see a pink glow on the house across the street (east) from me so I grabbed my camera and looked out the west window. I didn't see very many pretty sunsets when there were 7 trees in the way but now I have a view. I have had several comments and emails asking about my crooked cobblestones. I label each of my posts (at the bottom) and there is a Label List on my right sidebar. Cobblestone Series is on the list so if you click on it you will be directed to all of the posts that show how I make the blocks, trim them, and design with them, and yes, they are my original design, but I'm sharing it with you.

These were a lot of fun to make and I can finally blog about them. The rainbow dragonfly made it's way to South Africa safely and the green one now resides in Ferndale Washington!!! This is a mini scrap buster!! I save a lot of little scraps and I decided to use some up. My leftover scraps and a left over piece of white fabric I simply layed the little scraps on the edge and sewed one straight seam pressed the seam then cut them into strips all cut and ready to lay out for assembly this looks good-time to sew! free motion quilting all quilted, now to decide postcard placement this looks good this looks better!! draw the outline of the postcard first, then stitch Now to design my little dragonflys and machine applique onto the surface of this little mini quilt!! working on the wings using freezer paper oh my goodness, so many choices!!!!!! what to do, what to do???!!! blue dragonfly done the fabric on the right for the wings, and initially I was going to use that lime green for the body, but changed my mind the darker green worked much better!! I used YLI 100wt silk to machine applique the dragonfly to the surface. done so now to layer the quilt with all the necessary parts for the postcard. there are 7 layers total, the quilt top, batting and backing, then two layers of heat n bond, pellon, and the back of the postcard. fuse the heat n bond to the back of the quilt, gently so that you do not squash the quilting fuse the pellon to that another layer of heat n bond onto the pellon and finally the back of the post card making sure all layers are well fused. after that, trim to the specific size which is 4" X 6" after you are done trimming, satin stitch the edges. I do a simple zigzag stitch at first, then go around the postcard twice with a good satin stitch. you can see that the green dragonfly was done with a varigated thread. That was FUN!!! Happy Quilting friends, take care and keep those needles sharp and changed after every 8 hours of stitching madness!!! :^) Martha
After finishing my last quilt, I decided that I needed to work on something just a wee bit less massive. So I decided to start making some Mug Rug/Trivets for Christmas gifts. So this is my first attempt at a Mug Rug. Finished size is 7 1/2" x 11 1/2". Is that too BIG??? I used a layer of Insul-Bright and a layer of Warm and White batting. I was thinking that it could be used as a trivet, if the recipient preferred. The back I used some scraps from my last quilt (Stratified Layers of Life and Love). I even had just enough of the faux piped biding that I used in the quilt to go around this little Mug Rug. I figured I get a mug at the dollar store and make some peanut brittle or fudge to go with this for Christmas presents. I think that works. Color Me Quilty! Pat

Now that I am on a mission to make 14 mug rugs before Thanksgiving I need to figure out a way to make them a little faster. The first thought was to not do a stitched down binding. My friend Cheryl did a fused binding, but I wanted to be able to wash mine if needed. I decided to try the pillowcase style finish. First I dump out a bunch of half made fabric. These are leftovers from other things that I have made that I save. Leftover triangles... Leftover blocks.... Leftover trimmings.....one of my favorite quilts came from trimmed edges. This one was already stitched together like this, a good place to start. Make it as easy on yourself as possible. Starch will also tame those crazy wrinkled edges. Straighten up one edge. Find some more scraps that work. . Add to that to make it fit. Keep going in the same manner to your desired size. I over size mine, do the quilting and then cut it to size. For the no binding method, layer your top on 2 pieces of batting with no backing. The 2 layers give it a little more heft to stand up to a cup, my preference. Quilt as desired. I like dense quilting, again I think it gives it a little more body. Trim it to the 6 x 9 {this seems to be a standard size}. It will finish at 5 1/2 x 8 1/2. Cut a backing the same size and layer rights sides together. This one was a little smaller, I was paying more attention to taking pictures and less attention to details! Stitch all the way around, leaving a large size opening, at least 5". Clips the corners off and turn. Push out the corners as best you can. There will be bulk and they will not be totally square. For this one I stitched 1/4" around the edge and did not like it. See the little bobble on the right hand side? Be sure to press well after, even a little starch is good. The second one I made was much better. I am not sure of the measurement but it was the inside edge of my walking foot. Probably around 1/8". I will make the rest of them using this envelope style as it is a lot faster and I like how it looks. I got so many comments on my husband sewing I just thought you should know he vacuums too! We went to a funeral Saturday and then had a party to go to. It was a bit much to switch gears for the party. He went for the vacuum, I went for the chocolate! What started out as going after some lady bugs ended up doing the whole kitchen. He even got those dust balls that collect around the legs of the chairs. He just can't help himself! I wish I had such ambitions... Kelly
I checked out my partners favourites to see what she liked so I thought this was appropriate.
When I signed up for the Mug Rug swap I foolishly thought “oh good, a quick little swap that I can whip out in a couple of hours”. Then I realized that I am who I am and that just isn’t my style. LOL. I rarely whip anything out. It’s been known to happen and ...

Autumn not really here yet, but I love this time of year so much that I start our Fall decorating right after Labor Day. Maple Leaf Mug Rug and Coasters Since I cannot show anything I’m presently working on, I thought it would be fun to post this tutorial for making Maple Leaf Coasters and Mug Rugs. I wrote it a couple of years ago for The Quilting Board and even though it is beginner level, people seem to really like it. The basic idea can be used for any number of things. I'll be making cookie coasters next. Half the fun of making these little maple leaves is digging through your scraps, picking out fabrics you like and then seeing how they turn out as a leaf. These are a really simple and quick project and they look great as table decor when not in use. We especially like the coaster size, but they are neat done up larger as mug rugs and even larger as hot pads too. 1. Start by printing out a simple pattern for a maple leaf. I use cheap quality printer paper. Size it a little larger than you want your finished leaf. I was really silly and searched the internet for a pattern I would like, before it dawned on me to step away from the computer and go outside, pick a leaf and make my own pattern. Do you get stuck in a rut like that sometimes? Print out the Maple Leaf Sewing Pattern 2. Make a layered sandwich in this order: Bottom - Quilt batting / Middle - fabric square, face up / Top - fabric square, face down. I've been sewing since Hector was a Pup and I can't tell you the number of times I have gotten layers like this in the wrong order. Pin your pattern onto the fabric sandwich. Layer your materials 3. Set your sewing machine for a very small straight stitch. Sew around the outside edge of the leaf pattern, starting and stopping at the arrows on the pattern. Reinforce the first and last corners with backstitching along the way. Sew around the outside of the leaf 4. Remove the leaf from your sewing machine and flip it over. Trim the batting away, following very close to the outside of the stitching, including into the v-shaped indent at the base of the leaf pattern. Trim the Batting around the edges 5. Flip the leaf over. Pull off the paper around the Outside of the leaf. Leave on the paper within the leaf pattern. Keeping it in place will help you to see the stitching line as you trim the fabric, especially if your thread matches your fabric. The paper left inside the sewing line 6. Cut away the excess fabric, leaving an 1/8 inch seam allowance, EXCEPT along the V shaped opening at the base of the leaf, where it is better to leave a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Trim the corners and clip the curves all around the outside edge of the leaf, being very careful not to cut into your stitching. (This is where leaving on the paper really helps!) Trim the corners and clip the curves 7. Now remove the paper leaf pattern carefully, keeping it whole for later use. Turn your fabric leaf right side out. Somewhere, back in Kansas, a rooster is missing his toupee 8. Very carefully work out the tips of the leaves to points and fill out the curves. I used a dull pencil to help me. Turn under the seam allowances at the opening and tuck them into the leaf, covering the batting. Now iron the leaf flat. Stitch or glue along the opening to close it. Ah, now you see my points! 9. Now, sew the veins of the leaf. If you are confident, then do it free hand, or you can replace the paper pattern you set aside and use it as a guide. It is really pretty to use variegated thread for this. Using the paper pattern to sew the veins on the leaf 10. If you use the paper pattern, be sure to use a very tiny stitch, that way it is pretty simple to pull off the paper when you are finished. Use tweezers to remove any little bits of paper that get stuck under the stitches. Remove the Paper Pattern Your leaf is finished… Now go brew a cuppa and enjoy! Maple Leaf Coasters Finished! Welcome to the Thank You To Our Teachers Blog Hop! If you have arrived here from Say It With Letters then you are on the right track. If you just happened to stop by my blog for a visit and want to hop along with us, start from the beginning with Memories with Jen. This is a week long hop and we will be posting on 3 separate days. (June 5th, 8th and 11th). Please make sure you hop on those days or throughout the week to see all the wonderful inspiration on what to make our teachers for thank you gifts. This is my second project idea. Here I've used fabric scraps to make some pretty and functional drink coasters. For these, all you need is some clothesline and a sewing machine, and lots of fun scraps. I made sets of these for Christmas gifts, and people really loved them! They're highly absorbent too, which is especially great in the summer! Another fun project using these same supplies is little fabric bowls. These are fun to make up and don't take very long. They look super cute holding craft supplies or paper clips. These would make a great teacher's gift too if you filled it with something yummy or useful! Thank you to everyone who has come by already and left comments! I am excited to meet you and see your blogs as well! Here's the next blog in the hop! AnitaAndBugs. Also - while I have your attention - go check out my friend Natalie's cute Etsy shop Hot Glue Hangover. (Isn't that a cute name?) She has the most gorgeous handmade wreaths and other fun stuff! She recently did a feature on my shop, just to be nice! And now I want to return the favor! Go see some cute stuff!

No worries if you made 1 block 9 times or 3 tablerunner with 3 blocks etc. :). Just leave a comment and let us know which Aurifil thread package you would like to get. The linky Party is open until the 29th November 23:00 o´clock Berlin Time. An InLinkz Link-up I wanted to finish my two tops but maybe I can make it the next Weekend. I was so busy making bee blocks and a mini / mug rug for Swappen auf Deutsch. Two stars for Heidi @libellenquilts with her fabrics- unfortunately there was one green rectangle missing so I could not finish the block but I thought I could sew the leftover triangles to a mini :). This block is made for Tina from her fabrics. She sent us the parts already cut for the exact size, which is a bit tricks for HST´s. I love it more to trim them to the neede size. But this is a real fantastic block design. The two bubbles are my October bubbles and I finished them just in time not be kicked out of my own bee :). You can find my Bubbles pattern here. Meine Bubbles-Anleitung findet ihr u.a. hier. And here are some letters for U. @flohstiche with her fabrics. And finally I made this mini for Swappen auf Deutsch 7. This must be send today :). It´s a pattern by the super talented Julianna @sewingunderrainbow - I just added wonky the star. Just in case you are to new to this QAL - More Details: Sandra from Hohenbrunnerquilterin and me are hosting this QAL.
