Last year I started writing these silly little fluency passages that would give my students practice at reading our CVC spelling words. I only wanted sight words and CVC or CCVC which limited my ability to create quality stories but I wasn't really concerned with that. I just needed simple, easy stories so my students could gain confidence as brand NEW readers. I originally listed these passages for sale on TPT with my spelling word pack but then thought that people may just be looking for stories just like I was. Recently my fluency pack has become my best selling item on TPT! :) It was definitely unexpected to see this item shoot to the top but very cool at the same time! :) I continue to update the file as I write new passages so for anyone who purchases it - don't forget to check back and download the new file! :)

Can I just say that I absolutely LOVE blogging! Boy how boring would teaching be without great ideas from others. I have to admit that although some things are my original ideas, most of the stuff I post about is things I have found on other blogs and just had to share. This past week, we have been working on the short u sound in Reading. Before we start each new sound for the week, I head over to Youtube and see if they have any videos from Hooked on Phonics for that sound. Here is the one for short u and trust me your kiddos will love it. Mine can't wait to hear it every day. I also created a little read the room activity with short /u/ pumpkins. I saw this on First Grader At Last and just had to do it! Here are the pumpkins I made for my room and the recording sheet I made to go along with it. Short /u/ RTR Recording Sheet Our skill was visualizing for last week too! I found so many great things on Pinterest for this skill. The kids totally got the skill after these activities. The first one we did was "The Green Giant" from Mrs. Williamson's Kinders. They turned out so cute and so very different which was one thing I really emphasized to my kids. Not everyone sees the same image. The other visualizing activity we did was during our station time and sorry I don't have a picture of that but I do have the printable I created for it. I saw this idea on Snippets By Sarah but I tweaked it a little to be more kid friendly for my kiddos. I used the poem by Ding-A-Ling by Jill Egglton because it had words I knew my kids could sound out on their own. Here is what we did... Mental Image Printable Enjoy Ladies!!!

This product contains 21 reading comprehension passages with questions that target fluency and comprehension. The 21 reading passages are presented twice, in 2 versions, for easy differentiation. The passages can also be used digitally as an Easel activity. Version 1 asks the kids to answer each question in a complete sentence and color the evidence in the text. Version 2 teaches the kids to look in the text and find the text evidence without writing a sentence. The students will have to: *read the passage 3 times and color a star after each reading (for fluency) *read each question and color/ highlight the sentence within the text that contains the answer *write the answer using a complete sentence (version 1) *draw a picture that matches the text (version 2) The texts have different levels of difficulty for differentiation. This lesson asks the students to go back in the text to prove their answer. This is a pretty hard skill for 1st grade and needs plenty of modelling. My mother brought this special family recipe from Europe a century ago. Cenci can be "dressed up" for any holiday—at Easter, I sprinkle yellow, pink and lavender jelly beans over them, and for Christmas, red and green candy sprinkles give the cenci a festive look. Even without the garnish, they always disappear fast! —Anna Coduto, Fullerton, California

Have you ever given your students the opportunity to record and listen to themselves read? As teachers, we frequently observe and conference with our students about their oral reading fluency. However, it can be much more meaningful for students to actually hear and evaluate themselves. Last year I started doing fluency self-evaluations as a center and was very pleased with the ownership my students began to take toward achieving their reading goals. My second graders used the free workflow app Showbie to complete their fluency self-evaluations. After practicing their passage several times, they recorded themselves reading it aloud. Once they played back their recording they filled out the rubric, along with their goals for next time, and sent it to me via Showbie. If you don’t have a class set of iPads, you may want to try one of the many free voice recording apps by doing a search in the app store. One of the best and most user-friendly apps I’ve found is Voice Recorder by Tap Media (free). Students simply press the “Record” button and then “Stop” when they are finished. Then they press the “Play” button to hear their recording. There’s even the option to save recordings in folders if you want to keep a record of your students’ progress. You can grab my rubric for free by clicking HERE or on the image below.
Looking for fluency activities? I just updated my fluency freebie. I added some short passages. If you need longer passages, I recommend visiting Reading A to Z. This is a great site with leveled passages. There are even some free books that you can download. Click HERE to get your freebie.
