“HourlyWolves presents:”
kiwa_hirsuta - the new blog in LiveJournal. There should be new interesting records soon.
Lamar Canyon Pack Inception I wasn't going to post about the killing of the '06 Female, since half my posts are about wolves dying. However I felt compelled to write this in light of recent events... In February of 2009, on one of many trips to Yellowstone to photograph wolves, I had a very rare opportunity to photograph a gray wolf under unique circumstances. Shortly afterwards I would learn this wolf was the '06 Female. "'06" for the year she was born. She was sleeping on top of a hill in Elk Creek just west of the Petrified Tree road. At the time my buddy Dave Collins and I thought she just happen to be there resting, so we photographed her for about two hours. When she would raise her head or move, we would grab some shots. Eventually she rolled over, stretched, and got up. She had looked at us many times in those two hours, and knew we were there. What she did next was unexpected. She started walking down the hill toward us! We were on an adjacent hill by the Petrified Tree road with a gully between and were shooting the entire time. When she got to the base of the hill, she was on ski tracks left by cross country skiers. The tracks ran laterally in front of us from right to left in the bottom of the gully. At this point she started to walk along these tracks all the while looking in our direction. First she walked right to left and when we thought she was going to keep going and leave she turned around and walked left to right again in front of us. This was like shooting a model on a runway! All the time still looking toward us... As if this wasn't good enough, she then left the ski tracks and was coming straight at us. This seemed strange because we were in plain sight and she had been looking right at us! We were the only people there. She appeared to be looking for something and was getting closer to the base of the hill we were on. If she came any closer we would lose sight of her, (we were set back from the edge)
I was lucky, this wolf walked in front on me on the road thru Lamar Valley, Yellowstone National Park. I am trying to identify if it is wolf 06. Please advise if you can help.

I first photographed her when she was two years old. She was out on her own and had just made her first known solo elk kill. This was a unique accomplishment for any two year old wolf or any wolf for that matter, male or female. Since then she had gained the attention of wolfwatchers from around the world. Her independence, intelligence, and leadership set her apart. She was my favorite. I will miss her the most of all the wolves that have gone before. You can read her Obituary in The New York Times here: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/09/science/earth/famous-wolf-is-killed-outside-yellowstone.html?_r=0 It is hard to digest the ignorance that has led to this tragic event. The reckless, irresponsible stewardship of these missrepresented animals is unacceptible. To help transition from mourning her death, to celibrating her life. I have partnered with renowned guitarist John Sheldon who has written a beautiful piece in tribute to her memory titled, "Wolf 06". "I wanted to make a tribute. I'll never know if I connected to some great wolf spirit, or just the wolf spirit in me, but what's the difference? The piece is my offering to wildlife and wolf lovers of the world. It's what I have to give." – John Sheldon, Composer of "Wolf 06" It is now the soundtrack to the slideshow. I have also added sixty three previously unreleased photos to this gallery. In addition, I have made a post on my blog about my experience with the '06 Female over the years, and since her death. I invite you to take a read

I will try to attempt to share with you the love I have developed for the foxes living in the dunes on the coast of the Netherlands, and the joy I experience in photographing them. I have started nature photography around 2012 and it didn't take me long to "find" this unique group of foxes living near the coast in an area where it is forbidden to hunt them so they have less fear for "us", the two legged creatures, and are very approachable. This gave me the ability to make close by photos and record their behaviour in a special way, and I by sharing these "moments" with you I hope to bring across the love I have for these beautiful creatures.
