Withania Somnifera is one of the best-known medicinal plants. It has been used in ancient Hindu traditional medicine (Ayurveda) for thousands of years. It is commonly known as Ashwagandha. It belongs to the Solanacea family of plants. Ashwagandha is a shrub growing to a height of about 150 cm, with small flowers, after which small red fruits grow in a paper husk. The latter occur in the form of berries encased in slightly fused plots of the calyx. Its roots and fruits are most often used for medicinal purposes. It comes from India and is cultivated there on a large scale. It is also common in Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Belonging to the same tomato family, it is commercially grown in madhya pradesh (a province of india). Ashwaganda in Sanskrit means horse scent: suggesting that it provides "the strength of a stallion". Japanese and American companies filed applications for patents on formulations containing the herb extract. Its cultivation is done through seeds, extremely easy, adapts to any type of climate. Originating in dry climates, it can be planted in any type of soil. Its roots are harvested in the dry period of the year (August and September).
