A young reader’s adaptation of whistleblower and bestselling author Edward Snowden's memoir, Permanent Record―featuring a brand-new afterword that includes resources to learn about the basics of digital security. In 2013, Edward Snowden shocked the world when he revealed that the United States government was secretly building a system of mass surveillance with the ability to gaze into the private lives of every person on earth. Phone calls, text messages, emails―nothing was safe from prying eyes. Now the man who risked everything to expose the truth about government spying describes for a new generation how he helped build that system, what motivated him to try to bring it down, and how young people can strive to protect their privacy in the digital age.“Snowden's sprightly prose, his deep technical knowledge, his superb knack for explaining complex matters, his ability to articulate principled action all come together in a book that is, if anything, BETTER than the adult version.” ―Cory Doctorow, BoingBoing

Earlier this week, I had someone ask for some recommendations of books that have science content within them and a couple of years ago I was asked for books with math content. These requests has made me realize that there may be other teachers out there that may want some of these same recommendations. Today I will share with you the science books I recommended and next week I'll share the math books. This list contains books I recommended to an 8th grade science teacher. He wanted books that weren't directly "science" books but that had science elements within them. Next to each book I've included how the book connects with the content. You can also click on the cover and it will take you to my review or its Goodreads summary. Novels with Science Content The books listed include some I have read as well as books that were shared by the science teacher who asked me for the list as well as books shared with me through Twitter when I asked for some help. From the original fly leaf: \"A distinguished American statesman and member of the bar, known chiefly heretofore as the Secretary of Commerce and Labor in the Cabinet of President Taft, as director in important enterprises, and as counsel for various corporations and individuals, here makes his bow as author (at the fine age of nearly 88) of a good book giving his recollections of life as it was lived, and war as it was waged, in the days of 1861 to 1865 during the conflict between the States. A penetrating pen-picture of things and places that few persons living today have experienced for themselves, and that still fewer are now capable of recollecting, Mr. Nagel's book also takes the happy reader to the Germany of student days, where as a young man the author entered the University of Berlin, which later was to confer on him the honorary degree as Doctor of Political Science. Known not less for his good works than for his great accomplishments, the present modest memoir will afford the reader both information and pleasure, and put in permanent form a record of days and ways that will not come again.\" This edition has been augmented with copious footnotes and illustrations to assist the modern reader to understand better the context of the time.
