While preparing for Halloween, a couple of my colleagues got together to produce a full taxonomy of Halloween monsters. For the project to work we needed to make sure it included as many monster types as possible in order to create the maximum amount of interest and intrigue. The scale itself created design challenges and involved a massive amount of research into folklores and mythologies from around the world. One of the project's greatest successes is the creation of a system for classifying monsters. The amount of monsters we found could have meant that the infographic became confusing and messy so categorisation was very important. We used the recognised form of taxonomical diagram and introduced categories like psychopath, spectral and cryptid to give viewers a way of navigating the large list. Ultimately the scale of research and design work needed was the main difficulty, but as often is the case with infographics it also seems to be its main appeal. It’s definitely worth investing the time in larger-scale projects like this.
