Letter on reverse (below) translated by GenBerlin; authored by Gef. Willy Christians on 5.8.1918 in France. The letter is addressed to his mother in Rüstringen. Victorious German soldiers survey the carnage wrought inside a British communications trench. In March 1918 Erich Ludendorff launched a series of offensives on the Western Front in an attempt to push for a decisive victory before the massive numbers of American troops began to pour into the lines. In many places, these offensives caught the Allies off-guard.
