Delos, 1937 Capri, 1935 Munich, 1946 Munich, 1946 Rome, 1949 Bomarzo Pier Paolo Pasolini, Rome, 1949 Rome, 1949 Ingeborg Bachmann Herbert List (1903-1975) left his native Germany in the middle 1930s to evade the Nazis (who were extremely unfriendly to homosexuals, especially the artistic-bohemian types). He wandered the Mediterranean, taking photographs as he went, and did not return to Germany until World War II was over. The lifetime body of work (well represented here) ranged through many styles and subjects, but my favorite pictures are the ones he made in and around Rome in the late 1940s. I only just discovered List's work and consequently had never seen the portraits of Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975) or Ingeborg Bachmann (1926-1973) – two among the writers I have idolized long enough to feel a little surprised when I find any photographs of them I haven't already seen, let alone such distinguished and piercing ones.
