Antique Port Glasses A Brief History The development of dessert wine glasses and traditional port glasses in 18th century Britain arose from a combination of politics and British entrepreneurship. In the late 17th century Charles II increased duty on the import of French wines as a retaliatory measure against restrictions imposed on the export of English goods on to the continent. He later banned the import of French wines altogether leading to merchants seeking alternative sources of supply, including smuggling. The wines of the Douro valley Portugal suited the English palate. Both English and Scottish merchants seized the opportunity. These wines took their name from the city from which they were shipped, Vinho Opporto became simply known as Port Wine in English. To begin with the wine was not fortified however to preserve the wine during shipment and prevent commercial losses it was fortified with brandy of grape spirit from the second half of the 18th century The sweeter, stronger and more aromatic fortified wines became a British staple. The development of tapered bottles that could be stored in cellars lead to the production of vintage port by 1775. The trade was curtailed during the peninsular wars but surged again after Arthur Wellesley, The Duke of Wellington, himself a lover of Port, drove the French out of Spain and Portugal. As a result Port became the greatest fortified wine in the world today. Port glasses evolved as smaller versions of Georgian wine glasses. There are drawn trumpet examples, small facet cut, air twists and plain stems with a folded foot and snapped pontil marks. Typically their capacity is much reduced compared to a Georgian wine glass and they are not as tall as the equivalent wine glass of the same form. Schott Zweisel Amber 3 Ounce Beehive Stem with Grape Etched Pattern Wine Goblet (Maker Mark), Set of 5. This set was made by well known quality German glass maker Schott Zweisel. The bowl has 5 finely etched grape clusters, 0.1 litre fill line, and the "Z" makers mark in a square. The bowl rests on an amber beehive conical stem. Each goblet stand 4 3/8 inches tall, 2 1/2 inches diameter, and serve around 0.1 l (~3 ounces). The set is preowned (probably 1970s) in very good condition with no chips, cracks, or scratches. Very nice set for entertaining or casual use.

A beautiful set of 6 vintage handblown Dartington Crystal Sharon sherry/ liqueur glasses with captured teardrop bubble in the stem, 1970s. These high quality crystal glasses have a conical bowl and a captured bubble, resembling a teardrop in the stem. A good sherry deserves a good glass and these stylish goblets would enhance the enjoyment of your favourite tipple. With clean lines and a comfortably heavy weight, they are simple yet elegant. The pattern is Dartington Crystal Sharon, designed by Frank Thrower. The glasses measure approximately 160mm tall and 60mm diameter at the rim. The glasses are in excellent vintage condition with no chips or cracks and only minor signs of wear. Some have a few tiny bubbles in the glass. Technical Description A fine 18th-century air twist wine glass dating to c1750. It has an unusual drawn bell bowl with a solid section at the base transitioning into a multi spiral air twist stem. Conical foot. The solid section at the base of the bowl gives this glass some extra standout. A charming set comprising four small fortified wine / liqueur - or 'shot' glasses together with four larger wine glasses - made in France, c.1920. These glasses have been hand made, pressing the molten glass into shape in a mould with the result that there is a line visible showing where the two sides of the mould have met. Also visible are slight lines and ripples within the glass and a few little bubbles, from the old manufacturing process. As with all antique glasses these manufacturing flaws are the type of character that give evidence of their age, rather than detract from their antique good looks. These lovely glasses with straight stems and faceted bowls are suitable for many tipples, from sweet dessert wine, sherry, port or any fortified wine or as shot glasses with a spirit that is enjoyed in smaller, neat measures; or larger servings of a favourite wine. All in the "Bistro Style" of the 1920's, these glasses are a perfect gift for the wine lover who appreciates French Antiques. The straight, Art Deco style of this glass is evident in the conical shape of the bowls, a plain band around the top indicating where a measure would reach; a larger measure easily possible when topping up comfortably under the rim. Small 'Shot' glasses: a measure of 10 millilitres up to the band; however the band is quite thick and the measure could be increased to as much as 30 millilitres - for instance with Absinthe, where the "louching" process increases the size of the drink as the spirit is diluted by iced water dripping through a sugar cube. These small glasses stand at 4.25" or 11cm high with a rim diameter of 2-1/8" or 5.5cm. Each glass stem is 2" or 5cm. Larger "Wine" glasses: hold a measure of 35 ml up to the line, but can be filled to give a good measure of 70 ml safely under the rim. These glasses stand at 5" or 12.75cm tall, with a rim diameter of 2.75" or 7cm. The glass stem is 2" or 5cm. The set of eight, without any packaging weigh around 850 grammes. As with all the French antique glasses that we see, they have a certain style in their perfectly imperfect manufacturing flaws.
