Amazing Blues, Antarctica. At twice the size of Australia , Antarctica is Earth's southernmost and fifth largest continent . It is also usually the coldest, driest, and windiest one. Describing the amazingly beautiful yet fragile the environment is difficult. My simplest descriptor is “Gob Smackingly Beautiful”. Your first sighting of an iceberg as you sail south towards the continent, is one not to be forgotten. This was certainly not the first or last iceberg I saw, but the serenity of the bluish light captured my attention. Getting to Antarctica is expensive and still not that easy. I wanted to avoid the usually stomach churning journey from South America via Drakes Passage, so decided to fly from the bottom of South America to an island on The Antarctic Peninsula. There are no permanent flight schedules, you simply must go when the weather provides a safe window of opportunity. Landing on one of the shortest runways on earth, which also happens to be gravel, is a hair-raising experience. Once on land, you then have to walk along the runway down to the water’s edge in order to hop aboard a Zodiac for the short trip out to your ship. The light you experience on the very long Antarctic summer days is unlike anything I had previously experienced. It is subtle to the point of at times being sublime. I am one of those photographers who is prepared to wait for more pleasing light. I captured this image one "evening" as our boat gently sailed along the silky smooth, protected waters of Penola Strait. Penola Strait is 11 nautical miles (20 km) long and averages 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) wide. It separates the Argentine Islands, Petermann Island and Hovgaard Island from the west coast of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula . It was named after the “Penola” an expedition ship of the British Graham Land Expedition of 1934–37. This was among the thousands of images I took while in Antarctica . Initially I overlooked this one, but when revisiting my collection, I realised the beauty in this one. Please take the time to study this image and feel the serenity that I do.
