Bailing out of a stricken aircraft became near impossible as the jet age dawned and the RAF began experiments with assisted ejection in the 1940s. The author was himself forced to use his ejector seat during the Gulf War and is well placed to review the development and use of aircraft escape technology. The story is illuminated by a number of dramatic first-hand accounts of mid-air disaster and survival.
