While young girls cannot be expected to perform intense kinds of First Aid, they should know what to do in case of an emergency. This is important because as they get older, they will have more responsibilities and will be relied on to do things as meetings and trips become more “girl led”. If you have a resource-a parent who is a doctor or a nurse (or close friend, neighbor or grandparent who is in this field and willing to help out), an EMT or the school nurse is available, this will be a fairly easy meeting for you to lead. The only things you will have to do contact the person who is guest speaking and purchase the supplies for the First Aid Kit. My troop earned the Brownie First Aid badge as their final Try It. (You can read about it here.) Step 1 Find Out How to Get Help From 911 From a young age, children have been taught about the importance of calling 911 in the event of an emergency. Hopefully, none of your girls have had to do this. One activity is to role play different scenarios about when they should call 911. Or you can have the girls stand in the middle of the room and say “Move to the right if you need to call 911, move to the left if you do not have to call 911.” This activity gets them moving and helps those who learn kinesthetically. Some examples to use: Your little sister falls down and scrapes her knee. Your friend or an adult falls down and cannot speak. Your dog or cat gets hurt. Your neighbor’s house is on fire. You and your sibling are fighting. It is important to stress remaining calm and speaking clearly so the dispatch operator can understand you and get help sent as quickly as possible. Have her put her name on it and you collect them and hand them out when needed. One of the things they may already be doing is caring for a younger sibling for a short while when Mom or Dad are running a quick errand. But what if something happens while on their watch? Earning the Junior First Aid badge is one way for girls to be prepared. Step 1 Learn the Steps to Be Prepared This is a fairly quick and simple step to do. Have the girls create a small chart on a half piece of white construction paper. In red marker, they need to write these steps: Check-See to see if it is safe to check on the person. Then see if the person can talk or respond Call-911 Care-Stay as calm as possible and ask another person to get an adult if one is not around the immediate area This chart can be placed by the phone at home or on the refrigerator. Step 2 Talk to First Responders and Step 4 Find Out How to Handle Urgent First Aid Issues Ask a first responder, like a police officer, to speak to your girls as one of the steps to earn the Junior First Aid badge. Photo from Pixabay Find out if there is someone in your troop community who can talk to the girls about what it is like to be on the scene of an emergency. If you cannot find someone and you meet in a school, ask if the school nurse can stay a bit extra and be a special guest at your meeting. She or he has certainly had emergencies over the years and s/he can talk to the kids about what to do if something happens at home or at school. Include questions about how the girls should handle urgent issues to combine the fourth step with this one. Step 3 Make a Portable First Aid Kit If your girls did this as Brownie Girl Scouts, then they may not have it anymore. Even if they do, you can make a different version of the kit for them to take camping or to keep in their school backpack or Girl Scout bag. Parents can even keep this in the glove compartment of their car. The key to creating this particular kit is to make it portable, so it needs to be small. Similar Four Pack Available on Amazon This colorful set of travel soap containers comes in a 4 pack. The perfect vessel for this kit is a travel soap container. Inside you can place: Band Aids in different sizes Individual packets of a topical antibiotic Q-Tips for applying the ointment Individual packets of moist towelettes or alcohol wipes Have the girls write “First Aid” in Sharpie on the top. Step 4 Find Out How to Handle Urgent First Aid Issues Lots of kids have peanut or other life threatening allergies. Do a "Peanut Drill" on what the girls should do if someone in class has a reaction. One girl should run to the nurse, one runs to the office, one goes to the teacher next door, etc. Image created by the author on Canva Step 5 Know How to Take Care of Someone Who is Sick Talking to the girls about how to make others feel better when they are sick is one step in earning the Junior First Aid badge. Ask the girls what their parents or caretakers do to help them feel better when they are sick. Tell the girls what you and your co-leader do for their daughters, and what your parents did for you. I have been my younger daughter’s Girl Scout leader since 2008, when I started my troop of six little Daisy Scouts. Like many leaders, I felt a bit overwhelmed when I first started, even though I had been an elementary school and preschool teacher since 1987. My leadership training was practically non-existent, and the internet did not have many resources available. Every time I had a meeting, I had to create my own lesson plan on how to go about it. Being a teacher, I had been doing this for my entire career-long before you could do an online search on how to do something. But when I attended my monthly Service Unit meetings, I spoke with other Daisy leaders who did not have my professional background. They felt a bit lost as to what to do and where to start. That is why I started my original Girl Scout blog, Girl Scout Leader, in January of 2010. I wanted to reach out to other leaders and help them as we traveled on this wonderful leader journey together. Over time, my blog evolved as my troop grew older. I used the old badge program since, at that time, the badges were still readily available and there were so many more Try It choices than the new program. Leaders are still using it, but the badges are becoming increasingly scarce. Leaders still have a lot of the same questions on how to earn Brownie Try Its that they had years ago. Whether we are at home full time with our kids, work part time or full time outside the home and juggle our schedules accordingly, we are all busy women who have committed ourselves to our daughters having a wonderful Girl Scout experience. The purpose of this blog is to make your life as a leader easier. What do we do after your girls complete the activities? Well of course give them the badge to display proudly on their vest, they earned it! Additionally If you are like many leaders we want to award our girls when they complete something even beyond just the patch. One great way to show achievement is with a certificate. Don’t worry you don’t have to make them, I found a resource that has done all the work for you and all you have to do is print them and customize the certificates with each girl’s name, badge or award earned, date, and troop leader.
