This product contains four open-ended accountable talk questions about "The Village Blacksmith". All four are text-dependent questions. I use these questions with my seventh graders in a "think, pair, share" format where they use their journals to take notes. These questions are CCSS aligned.

Within a river valley near the starting point of this seed you'll see a village with a blacksmith. The village is a dark oak village nestled between down by the river with roofed forest, swamp and plains biomes nearby.
American Chestnut Tree w poem..This six- pack of cards features an ink drawing of a sprawling American Chestnut Tree ( Castanea dentata) dwarfing the horse and blacksmith standing beneath it. Horseshoes anchor the corner spot illustrations and chestnut leaves grace the side borders. The familiar, first stanza of the 1842 poem, "The Village Blacksmith" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, is penned in the bottom border-' Under a spreading chestnut tree, The village smithy stands; The smith, a mighty man is he, With large and sinewy hands; And the muscles of his brawny arms...Are strong as iron bands.' I loved hearing my Dad recite this poem and others as we'd stand at the kitchen sink doing dishes after supper. I drew an American Chestnut tree at the request of my friend, Cindy K. Most of these trees succumbed the Chestnut blight, but efforts are being made to restore it. This pack of cards would be perfect for handwritten notes, or for the children or poetry lovers in your life. They are also ideal as coloring cards for people of all ages. The illustration on these blank, ivory notecards was created by Afton artist, L.C. DeVona. The drawing was created using a Staedtler technical pen (with a .01 point). The original drawing was the October drawing for her Farmhouse Greetings' "An Illustrated Year" 2009 CALENDAR, and also is the September drawing for DeVona's 2016 'Illustrated Verses calendar" but is now being offered in this Etsy shop as a notecard design or as an unframed, signed, colored print https://www.etsy.com/listing/264464661/american-chestnut-tree-unframed-8?ref=shop_home_active_18 . Cards are printed by the artist on a monochrome, laser printer on ivory cover stock, measure 5 1/2" by 4 1/4", and come tied with green ribbon with matching envelopes. Begun in 1984, Little Woodham is a fascinating re-creation of how an English village could have looked in 1642. The village, beautifully situated in an ancient oakwood, consists of more than a dozen structures ranging from a fisherman's shelter to an Ale House, Blacksmith's forge and an Apothecaries shop. On open days it is staffed by volunteers in period costume who can be seen tending the herbs and vegetables in the cottage gardens and practising a wide variety of period crafts. Around 1500 school children visit the site each year.
