Is he or she like Hazel with many fears? The second book in Carole P. Roman's Oh Susannah series is perfect for new readers who have fears. We shared the first book in the series here. The second book is Oh Susannah: Things that Go Bump by Carole P. Roman and illustrated by Mateya Arkova. This book picks up where Oh Susannah: It's in the Bag left off. It is the morning after the bag explosion and her parents are paying extra attention to Susannah--almost too much. Susannah is afraid to have her first sleepover at her best friend's house. She is afraid because Lola's house is old and spooky. It does not help that Lola's brother is always telling Susannah about ghosts in the house and trying to scare and startle her. Susannah does not know how to tell anyone about her fears and forces herself to go and face them. Things I love about this book is the diversity in the book. There are slight mentions of skin color and cultural names plus one of Susannah's friends who helps her understand fears a bit more is blind. I love how Macy tells Susannah that the dark is like a cup of hot chocolate: cozy and comfortable. This sticks in Susannah's mind and helps her get through being in the dark with Lola. I love that there is not special attention to the skin color of Lola and her family, but that it is treated as perfectly normal for the girls to be of different races. I also love how it delves into the different ways of dealing with fears and what people are afraid of. There are some of the normal things--ghosts, dark and clowns and even one fear of unicorns. Plus Susannah is trying to understand why people keep saying: "I'm afraid..." when they are not really talking about a fear. For example: "I'm afraid your teacher is sick today." There are so many aspects that kids think of that adults no longer remember and this book has so many of them. This book like all of Carole P. Roman's books shares life and helps children learn to accept differences. We have had the pleasure of reviewing Oh Susannah: It's in the Bag, Captain No Beard Series, some of her If You Were Me Historical Series, and some of her If You Were Me Cultures Around the World Series.
