What Is a CGM? A continuous glucose monitor (CGM) is a device consisting of a small sensor wire that is inserted under the skin and delivers information about the glucose content of interstitial fluid (fluid found between cells) to a transmitter, which then relays the readings to a receiver. The glucose readings of the interstitial fluid are converted to the corresponding blood glucose values, which are displayed to the user on the receiver. This fluid is tested every 5 minutes, continually, for 288 blood glucose readings per day. The great advantage of the technology is an almost continuous data stream, allowing patients to be more proactive in their blood glucose management, note trends and chart their blood glucose on a graph which helps to achieve tighter control, and creates a safety net to prevent extremely low or high blood glucose values, which can be dangerous.
