Are you teaching your students to read and understand descriptive passages? If so, this activity would make the perfect supplement to your lesson. This download contains two activities pertaining to the descriptive text. On page one, students will read a short passage about penguins. With a partner or small group, the students will turn and talk about the passage using guiding questions. Page two can be used for independent practice, in which students will read a short passage about sharks and answer a few multiple choice questions. Example questions from pages one and two: Page 1, Turn and Talk: 1. Circle some descriptive words or phrases that help you visualize the information in your mind. 2. Looking closely at the first paragraph, what do the author’s words help the reader understand? Discuss. 3. Why do you think the author used the words “biting” and “whipping” in the first paragraph? Discuss. Page 2, Independent Practice: 1. What makes this passage descriptive? 2. Which of the following would be a descriptive detail from the passage? 3. How does the photograph contribute to the text? In other words, how does the photograph help the reader understand the passage?
