This is a great project to engage and challenge your students, all while allowing tremendous student choice! Who wouldn’t love to design their own amusement park?! The student handout includes instructions for the entire project, along with a scoring guide! To start off, there is a pre-planning document for students to complete. There are 2 main project components: writing and mapping. Requirements for creating the park include: Naming the park Choosing a theme for their park Designing a logo Naming and describing 8 rides Naming and describing restaurants and other attractions Ultimately, students will CREATE A MAP of the park. This includes mapping elements such as clear labeling and a legend. While I have my students make their map by hand on 11 x 17 paper, you can allow students to create theirs digitally. For the second component, students will write about their park, making sure to include answers to 10 guiding questions. As students work through the different steps, I check off their progress on the handout/scoring guide. I get higher quality work from my students when they get constant feedback as they work. I will soon add some student examples - both good and bad. I love this project… and so do my students! I hope you will too!
