Many Mormons are familiar with the story of how then-apostle Wilford Woodruff had a vision of the Founding Fathers in the St. George Temple and how they asked him to do their temple work. Some Mormons may also be vaguely aware that when Woodruff did the Founding Fathers' work that he also performed the ordinances for about 45 “other eminent men” from history.

As announced earlier this year, beginning on December 29, 2019, the Salt Lake Temple will be closed for renovations for the next four years. Portions of Temple Square will also be undergoing significant changes. As the heart of Salt Lake City, Temple Square has been transformed many times since it's mid-1800's creation, with the adding and removing of numerous buildings, structures, and features. Below are photographs documenting Temple Square's history, showing both the area's past, present, and future.

The story of the founding of the United States is one of heroism and daring mixed with defiance and insurrection; nobility and high idealism countered by cunning and betrayal; compassion and self-sacrifice intertwined with conquest and greed. It is a narrative not simply of the great tide of events that effected the unlikely defeat of a mighty empire by its own colonies, but of the character of the men and women who rejected kingship in favor of democratic governance dedicated to the rights of mankind and the principles of liberty, justice, and peace. In the pursuit of these ideals, the Founders envisioned themselves guided and protected by an inspiring spirit that bound them together and gave their individual struggles and ordeals a common purpose. In the very act of forging a new nation and setting forth their thoughts in documents such as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, the Founders saw themselves building a home, a permanent dwelling place for this spirit--a Temple of Liberty. The story of how this Temple was built and its meaning for the people of the nation is embedded in hundreds of works of poetry, art, architecture, sculpture, and song from the first century of the nation's history. In this compelling study of the Revolution, Spaulding and York draw out this often forgotten dimension of the Founding of America, indicating a basis for a renewed understanding of the intentions of the Founders and their extraordinary significance for our own times.
"My Fathers House" There’s a few reasons this story of Jesus cleansing the temple causes me to pause. First, I value His example of righteous anger. Righteous anger has the power to move and make right, and it is often sparked when others are being mistreated. Second, His bravery at standing up for His Father. Finally, I often create images from the point of view of those who have turned from God, because I often do, and that is how the Savior found me. Perhaps as the merchants were fleeing, one looked over his shoulder and saw the glory of Christ’s righteous anger and was changed. This image is a reminder to not turn from God and His holy ways, and to stand up for His truths. 1 high quality Instant downloadable JPEG digital file, ready for printing. Lost in a deep depression, Marie Mutsuki Mockett visited a temple owned by her mother's family near Fukushima. There, she found traditions and ways of thought that helped her work through her grief.
About this Image:In this image, a twelve-year-old Christ is found in the Temple at Jerusalem conversing with doctors and lawyers after three days of being missing while He and His parents went up to Jerusalem for the feast of the Passover. There is a stark contrast of His youthful face and penetrating gaze amidst a sea of heads of wise doctors and lawyers as they engage Him in an intellectual and scriptural discourse. He clearly was not intimidated by their academic knowledge and He managed to astonish them with His answers and understanding, a testament to His true identity as the Son of God.About the Artist:Filipina-American artist, ROSE DATOC DALL was born in Washington, DC and raised in Northern Virginia.
