Celebrate and discuss winter holidays in your classroom with these printable books. Holidays are often talked about in classrooms, but it can be difficult to find appropriate text for younger students. These readers were developed with K-2 students in mind. What holidays are included in this resource? New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Chinese New Year, Groundhog Day, Valentine’s Day, and Presidents’ Day Will my students be able to read these books independently? The books vary in difficulty. You will probably find it best to read the book with or to your students. Often you will find vocabulary related to holidays is more difficult and not decodable. Can you tell me more about the content of the books? New Year’s Day: The new year is the perfect time to talk about resolutions. The reader introduces the concept of goals or resolutions and has a few pages with fill-in-the-blank sentences for students to set goals (being a friend, reading books, learning something, helping family). Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: This book provides very basic information about Martin Luther King, Jr. and is meant to be used as a supplement to instruction. Chinese New Year: The Chinese New Year occurs on a different date each year as it follows the Lunar Calendar. The book features one page for each animal in the Chinese Zodiac. The content of each page describes the animal characteristics according to the zodiac. (e.g. Sheep are happy when others are with them. They are artistic and creative.) There is also a list of dates included for each animal referencing the year of the animal. The book does NOT include background information on the Chinese New Year or the history of the Zodiac. The content only describes characteristics of the animals. The last page of the book includes three questions for students to answer: What year were you born? What is your Chinese Zodiac animal? Do you think you are like your animal? Why? Groundhog Day: This book touches on when Groundhog Day is, who Punxsutawney Phil is, and what predictions may come from his shadow. Valentine’s Day: This book does not talk about the history of the holiday, which is celebrated on the February 14th every year. Use this book to discuss what you might do on Valentine’s Day. Cupid is not referenced. Presidents’ Day: There are three books included for this holiday, which is celebrated on third Monday of February every year. These readers can be used independently, but your students will learn more by reading all three books! The George Washington book provides brief background on Washington's life and where we see him today (quarter and dollar bill). The Abraham Lincoln book provides brief background on Lincoln's life, what he did during his presidency (ended slavery), his assassination, and where we see him today (money and memorial). All About Presidents gives very basic information on that fact that we elect our president and the roles/responsibilities a president has. Do you offer any other books? Yes, in my store you can find more holiday books, guided reading books, and content-area books (such as life cycles).
