450 jaar Nederlandse Kerk Austin Friars in London. Kerk in de City gaat over een Nederlandse kerk midden in het zakencentrum van Londen, vlakbij de Bank of England, de Stock Exchange en St. Paul’s Cathedral. Austin Friars ontstond in 1550, toen Koning Edward VI aan protestantse vluchtelingen uit de Zuidelijke Nederlanden een voormalige kloosterkerk van de Augustijner monniken schonk en vrijheid van godsdienst. Nu, 450 jaar later, houdt deze Nederlandse gemeente nog steeds haar zondagse kerkdiensten op precies dezelfde plek in Londen. Ook organiseert zij daar allerlei doordeweekse activiteiten. In dit boek staan de ontwikkelingen centraal die de kerk sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog heeft doorgemaakt. In een inleidend hoofdstuk wordt de periode 1550-1945 kort samengevat. Uiteraard drukten zowel de Nederlandse als de Engelse (kerk)politiek en economie hun stempel op de kerk. Wat de geschiedenis van Austin Friars zo interessant maakt, is de combinatie van een eeuwenlang bestaan met een voortdurende bereidheid tot vernieuwing.
