The beaches of Okinawa, Japan are made of star sand: the tiny ‘tests’ or shells of microscopic unicellular organisms called Foraminifera. There are ~10,000 species of Foraminifera but this star-shaped one, Baculogypsina sphaerulata lives in huge numbers in the seas off Okinawa.
