After the Austrian armies were defeated the Austria-Hungary empire collapsed. The last Hapsburg emperor, Charles I, renounced the right to participate in affairs of government, and Austria became a republic. The Allies' final series of attacks against the whole German position on the Western Front were known as the battles of the Meuse-Argonne.
