Antiguo Museo Municipal de Madrid. El Museo de Historia de Madrid, antiguo Museo Municipal, se encuentra en la calle Fuencarral nº 78. Ocupa el edificio del Real Hospicio del Ave María y San Fernando (1673), de estilo barroco y construido por el arquitecto Pedro de Ribera. Sus diferentes fachadas dan a tres calles, la principal da a la Calle Fuencarral, también a la Calle Beneficiencia y a la plaza situada en la Calle Barceló. El edifico es declarado en 1919 monumento Histórico-Artístico gracias a la ayuda de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando y a la Sociedad Española de Amigos del Arte, lo que permitió su conservación. En 1926 esta sociedad organizó, con mucho éxito, la Exposición del Antiguo Madrid, siendo el edificio restaurado para la ocasión por el Ayuntamiento y como consecuencia, se decidió crear el Museo Municipal, que fue inaugurado el 10 de junio de 1929. Fachada de la Calle Fuencarral. El museo está pensado para ser un completo recorrido por la historia de Madrid desde que fue declarada capital de España en el siglo XVI. Las obras expuestas están distribuidas en un total de 14 salas, y se caracterizan por su gran variedad, siendo destacables las de pintura, escultura, muebles, abanicos de los siglos XVIII y XIX, planos, maquetas, porcelana de las fábricas del Buen Retiro y de la Moncloa, y platería. Varias de las obras han sido prestadas por el Museo del Prado y La Academia de las Artes de San Fernando. Contiene también obras de los siglos XIX y XX con trabajos de Joaquín Sorolla, Raimundo Madrazo, Pedro Berruguete, Aniceto Marinas, Ricardo Baroja, José Gutiérrez Solana entre otros. También hay que citar una colosal Virgen con San Fernando de Luca Giordano, que preside la capilla, así como la monumental Maqueta de Madrid, realizada por León Gil de Palacio en 1828/1830 y que está considerada como una de las más importantes de Europa en su género. Su interior ha sido completamente remodelado y modernizado, conservando muy poco del original, La antigua capilla se ha pensado destinar para albergar la pintura religiosa. También se ha creado una amplia zona de acogida en el antiguo patio que permite guiar al público a través de las distintas salas de la exposición y acceder a los nuevos servicios del museo. Tiene una exposición permanente y otras que van cambiando de temas variados.
