This documentary is one of the few I show my Social Studies classes. This video covers the slavery that came after the passage of the 13th amendment. It deals specifically with convict labor and debt peonage. There are interviews with descendants of those placed in convict labor or debt peonage along with reenactments and historical context. It's an excellent video, and really eye opening for my students. This viewing guide provides guiding questions for students for the full video - Slavery by Another Name. A key is included to check for accuracy and to provide to Special Education students for differentiation. There are 22 questions in all. I like to pause the documentary to go over the answers, so this provides enough to keep them engaged without making the process unwieldy. Included in this resource: A PowerPoint Version (editable) A PDF Version (not editable) A Google Slides Version (provided on the front page by a link to make your own copy for editing) DISCLAIMER: PLEASE preview all videos before showing to your students. I provide warnings of what I might find objectionable in the lesson descriptions (which you can view through the previews), however, what is allowed in my classroom might not be ok for yours. Thanks for your understanding. Secondly, I try my best to provide links for videos when they are available, however, they can change at any given moment. This young adult adaptation of the New York Times bestselling White Rage is essential antiracist reading for teens. An NAACP Image Award finalist A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year A NYPL Best Book for Teens History texts often teach that the United States has made a straight line of progress toward Black equality. The reality is more complex: milestones like the end of slavery, school integration, and equal voting rights have all been met with racist legal and political maneuverings meant to limit that progress. We Are Not Yet Equal examines five of these moments: The end of the Civil War and Reconstruction was greeted with Jim Crow laws; the promise of new opportunities in the North during the Great Migration was limited when blacks were physically blocked from moving away from the South; the Supreme Court's landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision was met with the shutting down of public schools throughout the South; the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965 led to laws that disenfranchised millions of African American voters and a War on Drugs that disproportionally targeted blacks; and the election of President Obama led to an outburst of violence including the death of Black teen Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri as well as the election of Donald Trump. Including photographs and archival imagery and extra context, backmatter, and resources specifically for teens, this book provides essential history to help work for an equal future.
Clint Smith seeks out troubling history, including white supremacy, white violence — and the erasure of the oppression of Black Americans — to understand what America tells itself about who we are.

\"A fine, invaluable book. . . . Certain to become essential to our understanding of the 16th president. . . . Kaplan meticulously analyzes how Lincoln's steadily maturing prose style enabled him to come to grips with slavery and, as his own views evolved, to express his deepening opposition to it.\" -- Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post Book WorldFor Abraham Lincoln, whether he was composing love letters, speeches, or legal arguments, words mattered. In Lincoln, acclaimed biographer Fred Kaplan explores the life of America's sixteenth president through his use of language both as a vehicle to express complex ideas and feelings and as an instrument of persuasion and empowerment. This unique and engrossing account of Lincoln's life and career highlights the shortcomings of the modern presidency, reminding us, through Lincoln's legacy and appreciation for language, that the careful and honest use of words is a necessity for successful democracy.
