Haddo House is a most elegant mansion, the architect for this mansion was William Adam and it dates from 1731 – 1736 with Archibald Simpson being involved in 1822 as some alterations were made. There is a sad story to this mansion in that William Gordon, 2nd Earl of Aberdeen built this mansion for Lady Anne Gordon his third wife, his two earlier wives having died very young. No expense was spared in constructing this most grand mansion and even today the size of it is overwhelming. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited and stayed here overnight in 1857 and the house also has its own private Chapel which holds services from time to time. These days you can get married at Haddo House and the chapel would easily seat 100 people. In 1981 Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother attended a service to commemorate the centenary of the Chapel. My tour took about 1hr 30 mins and I really enjoyed it, the guide was full of wee stories and gave us plenty historic facts. If you are a member of the National Trust for Scotland entrance to this estate is free but you need to book an appointment to see inside the house, for me the tour was very interesting, a privilege to see such a wonderful place. www.nts.org.uk
