Lir agus Aoibh/Lir and Aoibh is the first in my Clann Lir/The Children of Lir series. In the time of the Tuatha Dé Danann, Bodhbh Dearg was made king to the approval of all except Lir. Anxious to appease Lir, Bodhbh offered him his daughter Aoibh in marriage. The couple lived happily together, having first a daughter Fionnuala, then a son Aodh, followed by twin boys Fiachra and Conn. This illustration depicts the couple, happy together with their two older children and faithful Irish Wolfhound, expecting the arrival of their twin sons. I describe my work as narrative, drawing inspiration from diverse stories ranging from Irish legends to familiar fairy tales, from romantic tragedies to the meanderings of James Joyce’s Leopold Bloom, to mention a few. Having an interest in medieval manuscripts and early Christian art has influenced my approach to image making and I frequently use gold and silver leaf in my work, most particularly on pieces that relate to ancient legends. I see some Irish legends as a literary equivalent to found ancient artifacts, affording glimpses into a distant past and I often use fragmented imagery to help convey the antiquity of a story. I think these pictures, and other roughs I posted earlier, give a good idea of my stamp design process. I decided against using the full image of the swan children of Lir sheltering from the storm and went for the transformation scene instead. But I was able to adapt the first design for use as a decorative panel on the stamp sheet. Amongst some old roughs I found the mock-up below where I was considering the tragic image of the old children of Lir from The Names upon the Harp. It makes a nice companion piece to the scene of the four of them huddling together as swans.
