The Paulsen Center is one of the gems of Spokane's downtown. It is currently in renovation. The first building was originally commissioned by Spokane mining millionaire August Paulsen. The original 11 story building (far left) houses professional tenants (lawyers, architects), an art school, and a few State of Washington offices. The building was erected in 1908 to 1911 and was designed by Dow and Hubbell. The design is said to be of the Chicago School for early skyscrapers with steel infrastructure. The taller building, centered in the frame, is the 15-story Paulsen Medical and Dental Building, added to the complex in 1928 to 29. It was designed by Spokane architect Gustav Pehrson. The external appearance is art deco era and the Spokane Historic Preservation Office notes that the detailing inside and out is in Spanish / Moorish style.
