7 Transitions and cuts every editor should know J or L Cuts are highly common. Their strange names result from how the scenes are lined up in the editing program. The L cut is used, when you want to switch from clip 1 to clip 2, but you still want the audio of the 1st clip to voice over the 2nd clip. The J cut is used the other way around. So you will already hear the audio of the 2nd clip, even though you still see the 1st clip. The J or L cut technique is commonly used in documentary interviews. Match Cut Match cuts need to be well planed in advance and if possible tested beforehand. A match cut is a technique of film montage, which cuts into a motion and resumes into another motif. Basically it is the link between two shots, that are not happening at the same place or time. Sounds confusing? If you are doing a good job, it will result in two simultaneously occuring stories, that will get our audience hooked and keep them the edge of their seats. Cross cuts/ parallel editing needs to be well planed to the last detail. But if it's done right, this technique results into great transitions for movies. Check out this example from the legendary movie - “The Godfather” Jump Cut The Jump Cut is an abrupt transition. Typically its used in a sequential scene and makes the subject appear to jump from one spot to another, to break the continuity of the clip. This technique may irritate the audience, but at the same time it will cause increased attention and a higher pace. For example: A character slowly walks along the street towards the camera. With a jump cut, you will see the person walking from a distance but suddenly, the person is really close to the camera.
