Porte Calihau lit up at night time in Bordeaux. The 15th century Porte Calihau is a historic gateway to Bordeaux, standing between the quays of the Garonne River and the Saint Pierre district of the city. Built in 1495 from the stone (callioux or cailhaux) which were used as ballast on boats and unloaded on the docks, it was made to honour a victory by French King Charles VIII. The tower has both decorative and defensive features, with a portcullis able to drop in the gateway, below the conical roof. Porte Calihau is now open as both a small museum and a viewing tower which offer vistas of the Garonne River and the Right Back, as well as the old city.
