The magnificently reconstructed Gymnasion at Sardis, rivaling the Celsus Library at Ephesus in splendour, though much less well known. Sardis is one of Turkey's less visited classical sites, probably a consequence of it's remote position, which made a visit here a complete contrast to the crowd-dodging of Ephesus we'd experienced the day before. The remains of the ancient city are somewhat strewn about over a large area either side of the modern main road. The two main sites worth visiting are the area centred around the Gymnasion (school) building (whose enormous facade has been spectacularly reconstructed) and the Temple of Artemis at a seperate site a mile or so to the south.
