Teaching students to identify and record key details and facts while reading nonfiction texts is such an important skill to aid in reading comprehension. These crafts are fresh, hands on and unique nonfiction activities for finding key details and facts, as well as specific text evidence. They are an alternative to reading response that will help you to reach all learners in your classroom. These nonfiction reading activities require little to no prep, and the only materials needed are scissors and glue (metal fasteners needed for the fan craft, word rings needed for the key details ring). WHAT’S INCLUDED: 8 Facts & Key Details Crafts: Gear Full of Facts: Students create their fact wheel by connecting the front and back with a metal fastener. They record facts on the back page of the gear, and the facts appear as the front wheel turns. Top Secret Fact File: Students record facts on notecards (which print 4/page or 9/page). The notecards are placed into the pocket of their fact file. Fact Finder Lift the Flap Book: Students use 3 books to record facts on one topic. Key Details Ring: Students record the topic onto a lock, and key details onto keys. They create a “key ring” by punch holes in each and placing them onto a word ring. Key Details Lock & Keys Lift the Flap: This is similar idea as the craft above, but does not require a word ring. Students record the topic onto the lock, and key details onto lift the flap keys. Fact Fan: Students record an interesting fact on each fan blade. There is space for students to create an accompanying illustration on each fan blade as well. Highlighting Text Evidence Lift the Flap: Students color code the highlighters they use to find specific text evidence (options included for color coding by sub-topic or “what the text says”). They put this information into their own words under each highlighter. Fact and Opinion Pocket Sort: Students record details from the text that are facts or opinions of the author. They sort these into a thought bubble/opinion pocket and a book/fact pocket.
