The wood for this piece was salvaged from a local grove. I was not aware when the wood was harvested that this ugly chunk would have so much to reveal inside once the woodturning started. What a surprise to discover all the beauty that this ugly block was hiding. This is one of the great joys of a wooduurning hobby. The process of turning this wood was quite slow because each cut had to be very precise or the wood could have broken apart and come off of the lathe. Once finished, I carefully glued the various "defects" so the final piece would be stable and strong and began the sanding and finishing process. Sanding was also not easy as there a many places where the sandpaper could and did get lodged in the wood. All to say, this became a slow process. Finally, finishing was for the most part routine but the beauty that this piece displays is exceptional. The overall dimensions are 10.5 inches diameter by 4" tall.
