Each state in the US has official animals selected to represent them. These animals usually are notable in the state's natural environment, or for their historical significance, or is important to the commerce of the state. The congressional representatives of each state choose the animal (often suggested by the citizens, sometimes by students and their teachers to help familiarize them with the process in which something becomes law) and an official recognition of the animal follows.
