Le'ts face it . . . student PowerPoint presentations can be uninteresting because students often put whole chunks of information onto one slide, making the material difficult to read. Then, to make matters worse, they simply read the PowerPoint to the class. BORING! The Pecha Kucha style of presentations is much more interesting and rigorous. Students must become familiar with the information because there are very few, if any, words to read on the screen. Students choose eye-catching pictures related to the topic instead and set their slides to a timer that will move on with or without them. Now they have to prepare and know their material instead of reading it off the screen. My students thought this was a strange way of presenting at first, but they admitted to enjoying the presentations much more by doing them the Pecha Kucha way after they saw how much better the learning experience was. They learned so much more from these presentations, and they were engaged in the process! In addition, students will complete a short evaluation of each presentation to keep them actively engaged and accountable as they listen to others. I didn't inlcude a time duration because it will depend on how many students you have and how much time you allow in class. Students will need access to PowerPoint and to a Promethean board or digital presenter. This style of presenting also helps students practice 21st Century Skills! They collaborate with a partner, decide on pertinent material, find pictures that symbolize their information, design a relevant slideshow, practice adhering to a time limit, and speak to the class. They are responsible for their learning in this student-centered approach. Pecha Kucha presentations can be used for ANY course!
