The Covenants Bible Unit is a set of discussion-based lessons on each of the Major Biblical Covenants. These lessons are an in-depth look at the covenants God made with his people and how understanding each of these "contracts" helps us understand the story of the Bible. Each lesson covers the highlights of a specific covenant with a focus on what we learn about God through studying that covenant. The lessons are aimed at students aged 10-12 (Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Grade), however, they could be used in a mixed-age classroom, a homeschool setting, or in a Sunday School class or youth group. There are 9 lessons in this unit: Lesson 1: Innocence in Eden - a look at the covenant God made with humanity immediately after Creation Lesson 2: Adamic Covenant - the covenant God makes with humanity after the Fall Lesson 3: Noahic Covenant - the covenant God makes with humanity after the Flood (the one with the rainbow) Lesson 4: Abrahamic Covenant - the covenant God makes with Abraham and his descendants Lesson 5: Moses & the Law - the covenant God makes with the nation of Israel through Moses regarding the Law Lesson 6: Palestinian Covenant - the covenant God makes with the nation of Israel regarding the Promised Land and their future behavior Lesson 7: Davidic Covenant - the covenant God makes with King David regarding his future descendants ruling on the throne of Israel Lesson 8: New Covenant - the covenant God makes with humanity through the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Lesson 9: Covenant Review - a review of all the covenants covered in this unit _______________________________________________________________ Instead of just hearing Bible stories or talking about them, each discussion requires the students to read the story of the covenant from their own Bibles. Students will then complete up to three worksheets for each lesson. Worksheet 1: Covenant Overview For this worksheet, students will fill in the important parts of the Covenant (people involved, terms and conditions, sacrifice, and sign) as well as other information. This worksheet serves as a reminder of the lesson and a handy reference sheet for students as they continue through the other covenants. Worksheet 2: Story Prompt The second worksheet is a story prompt related to the lesson. Students are encouraged to use their creativity to write a short story based on the prompt. Worksheet 3: Beyond the Story The third worksheet takes students beyond the lesson in a creative way. Students will be given ways to step into the story and see the world of the characters in a new and exciting way. _________________________________________________________________ Since each lesson includes 3 worksheets, the lesson can be given over multiple days: Day 1: Discussion and Worksheet 1 Day 2: Story Prompt Day 3: Beyond the Story I recommend using one lesson each week so that they do not all run together. However, you could do one lesson a day and complete the entire series in 9 days should that fit better into your school calendar. _____________________________________________________________ Powerpoint Slides The guided discussion for each lesson includes lots of open-ended questions for your students. Powerpoint Slides for each lesson show these questions and other important information (like the Bible passage you're focusing on) so that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. Lesson Duration Plan to spend 20-30 minutes on each discussion. The duration really depends on how engaged your students are in the conversation and how many additional questions/comments they have about the material. The worksheets should take 10-30 minutes to complete (writing the story will take the longest amount of time). Worksheets could be assigned as homework to shorten your lesson time. ______________________________________________________________ For more great Bible Units from RUKU Treehouse, follow these links: Please note that these units are only lesson plans/guided discussions and do not include worksheets or powerpoint slides (yet).
