★ ★ Gummy Bear Osmosis Lab ★ ★ Students will observe the effects of osmosis on a gummy bear in this guided scientific method lab report. About This Activity: The purpose of this lab is to observe the effects of osmosis on a gummy bear. I created this as alternative to the classic "egg lab" for my special education middle school science class to observe a tangible model of osmosis. The students were impressed that the gummy bear left in salt water becomes slightly smaller and the gummy bear left in plain water becomes much bigger! Prior to this lab, I taught a mini-lesson on osmosis. I also showed a brainpop video as reasearch. The students then hypothesize and collect data for a gummy bear left in plain water, salt water, and no water (control group). It is a two day lab, having students measure on day one and again on day two to measure changes. Students then reflect on the changes in an analysis section and complete a conclusion. The conclusion contains close sentence paragraphs to complete using the vocabulary words: cells, osmosis, selectively permeable, membrane, and applying higher/lower concentration and movement of water inside/outside the cell (gummy model). An answer key is included. If you teach the content for this slightly differently, the conclusion is optional. You can have students write their own standard lab conclusion on lined paper to adapt the content to the extent you taught osmosis with the lab. I see this lab best used in 4-6 grades and/or special education resource room 6-7 grade. This activity is just as good for the regular education middle school classroom, however, the conclusion would not need to be quite as scaffolded. This is an easy fix for leveling within the classroom by requiring a standard conclusion. I teach this following my "Diffusion Inquiry Activity".
