This set of 30 improv cards (and 2 blank ones) contain a line that can start a conversation. These cards provide practice in pragmatics and fluency as students try to construct a scene, and decide how natural or absurd to make it. It's also a great way to teach body language and intonation to ESL or EFL students. "Shhh. Did you hear something?" can be fairly innocuous if it's said in a normal tone of voice. Or it can be quite frightening if it's said dramatically! "Don't cry" can be a threat, an expression of sympathy, or a whine depending on the tone. ****************************************************************************************************************************** These cards can be used in a variety of ways, and there are instructions included. Generally, we suggest modelling intonation and body language by repeating an expression such as "That's ridiculous" or "It's complicated" in different ways. Then have students drill them. Next, put students in pairs. Have them pick a card at random. Student A chooses an emotion and reads the line to start the scene. The scene can go any way the students want, BUT they can say anything they they have to go with whatever their partner says as if it is true. To start with, time them and make it short, 90 seconds perhaps. You can gradually make the time longer and longer and add variations like: 1) Other students can jump in at various points 2) Other students can tag the speakers out/the speakers can tag other students in 3) Play mood music as they act. Have them replay the scene with different music 4) Give them characters or a genre of movie. Have them redo the same scene with different characters and genres.
