Koinobori Craft! May 5th is Children's Day in Japan. Families will hang koinobori, or koi fish flags, outside of their homes for a few weeks prior to and after the holiday. Each flag is supposed to represent each member of their family. The largest flag is always the father's flag, the next largest is the mother's flag, and so on. Koi fish represent determination and persistence, traits they hope their children will embody. This PDF is for your students to create their own koinobori! Students can either cut out and glue on multi-colored scales or draw their own. Once completed and dried, roll up the paper and glue where it says "glue here" to create a tube. I like to punch two holes at the top and loop a string through them so my students can hold it. Streamers are also fun to attach to the bottom! These are great for display, too! If you can print it on larger paper and make a larger koinobori, all the better! Enjoy!
