The number of marathons has doubled in the past decade, to about 850. To highlight some of the better 26.2-mile races, we looked at U.S. marathons that debuted since 2008 with at least 500 participants. We aimed for geographical diversity, pored over runners' reviews, and consulted with Bart Yasso, RW's chief running officer. These nine rose to the top.
