Vanilla-leaf is the common name for Achlys triphylla. When it first emerges in spring its vibrant lime green/chartreuse color stands out against the darker forest green colors. It has a wonderful vanilla-like scent. Like this photo it often forms pure stands in forest and woodlands. This stand was found along the trail in Rosewall Park on Vancouver Island, BC. It is a perennial that grows to a height of 10 to 30 cm tall. The leaves are on a stalk that grow directly from a rhizome. It has a three-parted leaf. The flower stalks rise directly from the rhizome. The long creamy-white spiked flower is 2 to 5 cm long.
