ABOUT THE PIECE: The Colorsafe paintings are an exploration of the use of color and pattern. They are constructed from 'vintage' catalogs of the late 1960s / early 70s, a particularly turbulent time for social change in this country. Yet inside the pages of these traditional catalogs, where time often seems to stand still (frozen), white models and models of color were standing side-by-side in equal status as friends and having fun - posing in pairs, laughing, joking and sharing secrets. Given the racial divides of the time, were they just acting/modeling then or was there actual camaraderie? Was it just a set up? The patterns here are not just in the clothing, but also in the way we still see and speak. The title of the show Colorsafe comes from a detergent technology that protects colored clothing against bleach to preserve colorfastness. By using the language of garment care as painting titles, that can be read very differently taken out of context, I amplify the subtle racial tension embedded in our vocabulary that’s still with us today. "With like colors", "separates", "mixed blends" are all loaded terms that seep into our everyday experience of 'dirty' laundry. ABOUT THIS ARTIST: Color collides with pattern in James Rieck's strikingly brilliant paintings. Inspired by vintage clothing and catalogues, Rieck transforms pictures of consumerism into icons of pop culture. However, beneath these electric colors and forms is a question of how style affects how we engage with the world around us. PACKAGING: 30x40" and 40x60" prints are shipped in a special fortified tube to guard against bending or damage. Framed 30x40" prints are shipped via FedEx in a bespoke cardboard box with a fitted interior armature for the frame. We do not frame the extra large, 40x60" print sizes because they are too large to ship without risking damage. INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING: We ship unframed prints internationally via DHL. The international shipping cost does not include the tax & duties, which will be the responsibility of the customer. Unfortunately, because of the high shipping cost we do not ship framed prints internationally at this time.
